Looks like an East Coast storm again.

A lot of models have it at a Category 1 this weekend.

And there is a small chance it will hit NYC. Google NYC & hurricane to read up on the 1821 and 1938 hurricanes. Here's a good article on the subject:
http://www.livescience.com/environment/0....

Here's a quote from another article at http://www.armageddononline.org/new-york....

"The city has been hit before, including by a September 1821 hurricane that raised tides by 13 feet in an hour and flooded all of Manhattan south of Canal Street — an area that now includes the nation's financial capital.

Depending on its track, a Category 3 storm — with sustained winds of 111 to 130 mph, akin to an infamous 1938 hurricane that swept through nearby Long Island — could produce a storm surge as high as 25 feet in some parts of the city. Officials estimate as many as 600,000 people's homes could be flooded, and 3 million would have to evacuate because of flooding and other perils; economic loss estimates top $100 billion."

I doubt this storm will grow large enough to do much harm, but imagine the damage a flood in Manhattan would cause.

Most of those losses would be a result of Goldman having to shut down its HFT computers.

Hard to get more than a Cat 3 in NYC with the water temperatures around these parts in most years. And water temps have been below average this year, so even that may be difficult.

Would still cause a lot of flooding and problems in certain areas. Not where I am, though...

The thing you're forgetting about is speed. If it's moving as fast as some do up the east coast, it can carry a cat3+ rating into NYC pretty easy.

Really though, a big hurricane that degrades down even to a cat 1 can have a storm surge associated with it that's much higher than expected for a cat 1. It won't take much to flood the hell out of the southern tip of the island.

Oh, I lived through hurricanes growing up on the Texas Gulf Coast. Even a Cat 3 is quite dangerous if you're close to the water (heck a Cat 1 would certainly be for those directly on the water like out in the Hamptons).

I'm also well aware of storm surge possibilities. Without giving too much away where I am, let's just say that I'm not worried about storm surge at my particular location in NYC.

I don't wish that on anybody. I've dealt with hurricanes all my life. Even some northeasters have been truly devastating. We had a March storm when I was in grammer school. All of Chincoteague Island was flooded. The caskets floated out of the cemeteries. Not pretty. I don't care how much I don't like an area, I wouldn't wish it on them.

If Danny does this..

This storm was extremely unusual in that its forward speed approached 70 mph (110 km/h). The unusual rapid movement allowed the hurricane to travel far to the north before it had a chance to weaken over cooler waters
