With the job market like it is, scams abound. Case in point: I'm helping a friend who doesn't have a computer stay on top of craigslist's help wanted ads. The site had this warning up this morning:
Quote:
craigslist SCAM ALERT

SCAM ALERT - affiliate scammers are posting bogus ads promising (nonexistent!) employment, paid research trials, or other compensation, but then notifying repliers that they'll need to jump through a hoop first, directing them to:

* background checking services
* credit checking or reporting sites
* sites where you are instructed to enter your resume or other personal information
* sites where you are asked to sign up for a "free" trial offer
* sites offering training or education
* sites offering a "system" for making money
* survey or focus group sites
* sites designed to deliver malware or misuse your identifying information

all in hopes of earning affiliate marketing commissions or otherwise profiting at the expense of persons seeking employment.

Lots of variations on this scam, but each generally involves dangling (nonexistent!) compensation, and then directing you to a website where you are asked to sign up for something, use your credit card, or input personal information such as your email address.

Continue to skilled trade / craft job postings

FUN FACT: If you are able to determine a scammer's "affiliate ID" and report it to their affiliate marketing program, this will often result in termination of the scammer, and confiscation of the scammer's ill-gotten gains by the affiliate program.

A friend just told me that he recently learned that a scammer had taken the listing info for his house (that he does have up for sale) and is trying to rent the house on Craigslist, telling people that he's out of town and they can only drive by and see the outside. If they want to rent it they're to send him the money and he'll send the keys. He got the pictures of the house and all the info straight out of the MLS listing.

AIKEN -- A South Carolina woman checking on a rental home she had posted on Craigslist was surprised to find the home occupied by people who thought they were renting it.

The Aiken Standard reported Lynn Marcantoni of Greer was in Aiken earlier this month and found the house was occupied.

Marcantoni called police, who learned from neighbors that a couple had moved in several days earlier. Their names were not released.

Marcantoni found information in the home and called them. They told her they had responded to an ad from the United Kingdom and sent a $700 deposit.

The husband said when the key didn't arrive, he went in through an unlocked window and then changed the locks.

Marcantoni says she hadn't posted the ad overseas, which was a fake. But she says she believes the couple and is letting them keep the house.

Don't understand why anyone would respond (or send their resume) to an ad that has an anonymous email address and no company name, or other identifier.

That is just asking to be scammed, IMO.

I've found CL to be a decent place to find some customers for my biz, you do have to wade through the jokers but there are a few people who are on the up-and-up. I do use a throwaway mail account to respond to ads when I do, just to keep my real email address from being harvested. The way I deal with it is that I give a response that shows I actually read the ad (puts you above 90% of all other responses in the eyes of anyone serious) and if I get a response, next step is to give a phone number and talk to a real person. At that point if all appears legit it's usually pretty safe to give out my real email and get down to business.

Bought a Ford pickup, Toyota 4-Runner, roofing, garage door, single axle trailer and a bunch of other items from Craigslist.

Sold a truck, tools and few other items using Craigslist.

Using a Google email address.

Just have to filter out the bull****.

Just like TF.

Rgw BUY/SELL/FREE parts are great and the discussion boards are decent also. But the Adult and jobs sections are all scams and spammers

I dunno, maybe a lot depends on the area.
Discussion boards there are useless, includes all areas.
I just stay away and won't waste my time of "filterin' out".

My only beef is the ridiculous lowballs I get for what I'm selling. **** off and die, I put the price up as firm and they'll email with an offer 1/2 that.

If the offers are for 1/2 of what "you think it's worth", then guess what it is worth?
