Trox, KD uses ThinkOrSwim's ThinkDesktop client for the videos.

You can download it and even try it out (w/ a paper trading account) for free here:

(Be sure to check out the tutorials on the client, they're a good place to get started)

Pivot point calculations for the new day are calculated from the High (H), low (L) and close (C) of the previous day.

Pivot point = P = (H + L + C)/3

First area of resistance = R1 = 2P - L
First area of support = S1 = 2P - H
Second area of resistance = R2 = (P -S1) + R1
Second area of support = S2 = P - (R2 - S1)

/es is the es mini contract, it's 1/5th of a full spx contract.

/nq is the same, but for nasdaq.

Aren't these'n on the first page? Hm... nq isn't.

Xorbe: During the big bull run, you could make money by picking stocks at random. Some people literally threw darts at wall street journal pages to pick stocks. What it was or what it had been doing is pretty much irrelevant.

Well, in the big bear market, short the phone book means to short anything, basicly to find something with meat on it and short it. It's really just a call for a huge and very widespread decline.

hello-
please forgive any posting violations, this is my second post. yesterday i posted in FedupUsa. i thought the forum was the proper place for my questions and that my questions and statements were truly of a sincere nature. i later received an email saying that the post was moved to another forum. however, when i try to access the post:

www.tickerforum.org/cgi-ticker/akcs-www?post=108270

i get a pop up box requiring a password which i dont have, after clicking cancel, a red page pops up stating that my request has been denied.

why? what did i do wrong? if in error, i apologize.

a very small portion of my post may be seen at:

I'm a dummy about money, but I've been able to assimilate the "dollar index", and I figured out the FRB/treasury scheme decades ago. Yet I have no "basics" on the stock market. Where do I read basic q/a faq about

1. Whats the difference between nasdaq and dow?

2. Whats a derivative?

3. What's the difference between a hedge fund and futures trading?

4. What about selling a stock short? or long for that matter?

5. What's the difference between preferred stock and common shares?

6. What's the difference between dividends and interest.

7. Here's a biggie. How much clout do "Russian tycoons", mafia or SCO investors have to make huge buys/sales/withdrawals- shutdowns.

mm: It was "bilged" and that forum is only accessible to members. The fedupusa forum is run by several moderators, I don't know why it was bilged. My guess would be because it belongs in TSHTF (the **** hit the fan) subforum rather than fedup.

===============

Momybg:

1) nasdaq and dow are two different indices. Nasdaq contains 100 stocks that are mainly of a technical nature: apple, google, etc. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASDAQ-100

Dow is the "industrials" and contains 30 stocks that are the real heavy hitters of the economy. 3m, alcoa, coca-cola, IBM, walmart, etc. (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dow_Jones_I.... )

2) A derivative is where a group of something (like mortgages) are bundled together and sold as a group.

3) A hedge fund is a company that takes other people's money and tries to make them more. Usually with a percentage of the account yearly and a percentage of the gains as a fee.

Futures trading is just like trading stock but on the futures market. It's basically betting where something will be in the future. The current /ES contract is "/ESZ9" which is betting on where /es will be in december when the contract expires. It runs within a few points of where the S&P 500 is. /ES is the "es mini s&p 500 contract" which means it's 1/5th the size of a full S&P 500 contract.

4) Buying a stock (going long) is just that, buying a stock. Selling short is selling a stock that you don't own, betting that the price will go down. (To do this you have to "borrow" the stock from somebody else who doesn't think it will go down.)

5) Preferred stock gets precedence in a bankruptcy and, if it pays dividends, will pay more than common.

6) Dividend is what a company pays to people that own their stock. They made X this quarter and are paying Y in dividends to the shareholders, there are Z shares, so X divided by Y is what each person who owns them gets for each share.

Interest is like on a loan. You pay it to borrow money and get it when you loan money. A treasury bond pays interest because you're loaning the government money and they are rewarding you for it.

7) Money talks, but the "big boys" in the market are the institutionals, goldman sacks, jp morgan, morgan stanley, douche bank, large hedge funds, etc... These firms might trade hundreds of billions of dollars a day. Russian tycoons aren't even close to the same class.

Hope that helps. [Edit: Hope I didn't screw anything up too much too :)]

Thanks. I wonder how much $$ the "big boys" make on currency exchange these days and how interested they are in shoring up the dollar, if that be possible. With that type of volume, they could nuke the buck.

What is the 1YR? Does it have a symbol?

For instance, "Not only is IYR notorious for selling off into the close, it's also notorious for ramping up into the close. And I got plenty of bruises to show for it."

Edit: NVM I answered my own question. iyr is a iShares real estate symbol. I confused it for "one year."
