While I think the cop should have tried a dog biscuit or pepper spray first, you really don't know what your dog will do in this situation until it happens. The sweetest, child-loving, friendly-to-everyone family dog can turn very protective when confronted with a stranger entering its territory - especially if the owners (the pack leaders) aren't home. That said, though, apparently they kept the dog outside in the yard. Dogs really should live in the house, not outdoors.
