New York, Florida and Pennsylvania have recently approved requests to halt distribution of white pages. Similar requests are pending in several states.

Don't think I've seen a white pages in 5 years.

Wish I could get them to stop leaving me the yellow pages.

I think my yellowpages were delivered a few weeks ago. At least I think that is what is in the plastic bag that is rotting away in the rain near my rural route mailbox. Next recycle day, I guess I should move that over to the recycle bin.

Phone books are good for target practice. You can get the bullets out of them to see how well they penetrated and how they deformed.

There is IMHO a substantial likelihood that at some point the internet that is available to the general public will go down. Surely there are many nations, e.g. China, North Korea, Pakistan, Iran, who have their best and brightest working to learn how to effectively cause this. Commerce will be SERIOUSLY disrupted when we cannot get access to the phone numbers of half the businesses we would like to telephone when we can't reach them by internet either. This is the kind of thing that Taleb (author of Black Swan) is talking about -- centralized is vulnerable and decentralized is resilient. The cost to keep at least some paper phone books is probably a cost which should be incurred.

I get so many phone books every year I'd prefer they stop it already. There's the Real Yellow pages, the other yellow pages, the white pages, the one put out by the Chamber of Commerce, then the problem that there is one for my County alone, my County with St. Augustine, and my County with Daytona.

Can't read the print in any of them anymore anyway.

I just ask my iphone to get me a number if i need something. Stop wasting the trees already. I'm tired of the crap being legally dropped all over my driveway.

GOOD RIDDANCE & LONG OVERDUE!

Seems like no one uses the phone book any more--or books in general.

My daughter once remarked that younger people rarely resort to books for information, even when they have the textbook at hand and it has an index.

I find that younger people are highly resistant to using a phone book or a dictionary. Granted, the internet is often faster and easier. But I
encountered many such types long before internet--people who ALWAYS called Information to get a phone number. Part of the reason for this is that not too many people know the alphabet. They literally can't look something up. I think that, more recently, people just forgot the alphabet, because there was never any need for it.

Using books for anything at all is getting to be a quaint relic of a bygone era.

I use the phone book constantly for numbers and for me it's much faster than looking it up online. I would hate to not have a phone book but it is getting harder to get home phone numbers as more and more people are giving up their land lines. I do have trouble reading the numbers though, they have gotten so small!

Oh Sharon, surely you jest? "Not too many people know the alphabet."

I can't handle the truth anymore...

(true story: my friend teaches science in NJ and she told me some of her students actually don't know the difference between a lion and a tiger)

(Another true story: quote from a elementary school teacher "Beef isn't pork, is it?")

A lot of people walking around must be in a lot pain from being so dumb it hurts.

ATT's Toll Free DA 800-555-1212 is still free. If the phone books stop coming and the internet goes down you can still dial 411 assuming your phone still works :)

Erica - I got one for you on how stupid people have become.

This while in a "medical facility" and question arose what was for dinner due to a gluten intolerance. The ignorant slut starts by saying FOOD (which meant shut up), to be followed by a threat that not eating was not going to help get the person out of there.

Explanation from "patient", was she could only eat the mashed potato & vegetable, since the rest of it was meatloaf and bread. Ignorant slut first claims there is no bread in meatloaf, and anyway, white bread is not made from wheat. And you would wonder why a child without any responsibility as a medical technician would question if beef and pork are the same?

Then another lazy ass employee dialed 411 ($2.00) on the County dime to get the number of a place down the road so they (employees) could call in a real meal for themselves. Too lazy to look it up, or too stupid? I'll go with stupid on that one.

I'm beginning to think people are stupid is overtaking war is stupid faster than we can take a breath.

Either way - the phone book is a dinosaur. I remember a few years back at the office (lucky their are so many other books I guess) the Real Yellow pages listed all the Government numbers wrong in Daytona......

If the net goes down then will 3g/4g cell internet still work? If so there is the backup for all smartphone users with a tether app.

Conversly, Thomas Register pulled the major marketing blunder of the century by dropping their dead tree and trying to butt heads with google.

Finding a genuine local supplier of industrial items took seconds with the old Thomas register and I still have mine though they are over 8 years old
