As far as I knew, we did not qualify for any TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) awards, yet we got a notice that the award was to be cut. Read on...

The following information is based on processing completed as of 11/18/2010.
Any changes submitted after that date by you or the school are not included in the following status.

TUITION ASSISTANCE DENIED FOR ONE OR MORE TERMS - THE TAXABLE INCOME YOU REPORTED EXCEEDED THE STATUTORY LIMIT FOR TAP AWARD ELIGIBILITY.

The 2010-2011 New York State Budget reduces all annual TAP awards by $75. Also, TAP is not available at the graduate level.

All Spring 2010-2011 awards have been reduced by $12 (TAP) and/or $16 (all other scholarships and awards). See below for more information.
Term School Sch Awd Award Status
Fall SUNY BINGHAMTON 4 YR(UNDERGRAD) $245.00 CERTIFIED BY SCHOOL
Spring SUNY BINGHAMTON 4 YR(UNDERGRAD) $229.00 ESTIMATED

Please review, and if necessary, update the information used to calculate your TAP Award by clicking the "Review/Update Your TAP Information" button. If you update your information electronically, you will not need to fill out any paper forms.

AWARD INFORMATION

The maximum annual TAP awards are reduced from $5,000 to $4,000 (or tuition whichever is less) for students who are attending certain degree or not for profit schools offering only 2 year degree or certificate programs; are dependent on parents or financially independent with tax dependents; and are recipients of New York State awards in the 1994-1995 academic year or later.

The 2010-2011 New York State Budget does not include funding for the Volunteer Service Recruitment Scholarship, the Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship, the Regents Health Care Professional Opportunity Scholarship, or the Regents Professional Opportunity Scholarship. Accordingly, no payments will be made under these programs for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Legislation enacted in 2008, and continuing in the 2010-2011 New York State budget, included changes to certain grant and scholarship programs to meet statutory mandated savings. As a result, the award amount to each student will be reduced by 2 percent. TAP is not affected by this reduction. If you are a recipient of an award affected, this reduction is reflected in the award shown.

All or part of your Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) award may have been paid using federal Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program (LEAP) grant funds or Supplemental Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program grant funds (SLEAP).

The 2010-2011 New York State Budget authorized the reduction of certain payments, including the payment of financial aid awards under the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and other scholarship programs, in the event that federal Medicaid funds received by the State were less than anticipated.
As a result of an actual State shortfall
, your Spring 2010-2011 award under the Tuition Assistance Program has been reduced by $12 . This reduction is in addition to the remaining portion of the annual $75 reduction required by the 2010-2011 State Budget already reflected in your award amount. Any Summer and/or Fall 2010-2011 term awards which you are entitled to receive are not affected. Additionally, if you are the recipient of a scholarship or other award such as the Veterans Tuition Award or the Scholarship for Academic Excellence, your award has been reduced by $16 for the Spring 2010-2011 term.

All awards are estimated until income has been verified by NYS Taxation and Finance and your eligibility has been certified by your school.

uh boy... Medicaid shortfalll. BIG SURPRISE. federal funds ending...another BIG SURPRISE. But, to J6P now is when they start to wake up - when it hits them in their pocketbook!

Now, what bothers me is that we don't qualify for any aid, yet there is an award listed that is to be reduced. What the hell does that mean?? Will I have to pay that amount in addition??? We'll see...

more "news" out of New York State on education. The New York State School Boards Association has issued a report on the effect of a tax cap on property taxes as they relate to school budgets. This was touted as a possibility by Andrew Cuomo during his campaign.

Worth a read... they say that a hard tax cap of 2% or inflation rate would cause a shartage of $3.3 BILLION between 2010-11 and 2013-14. This does not include the big school distrcits like NYC, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester... because they cannot levy taxes.

They blame 9/11 for stock market losses leading to higher pension requirements. FULL OF FAIL!
