I'm a fan of the newer Android devices (e.g. 2.1 or 2.2 Android versions)

What carrier? That matters a lot.

I'm using a EVO 4G with extended Battery. Android 2.2

edit: $90 monthly, 450 minutes talk and unlimited data, Sprint.

Like having a small computer in my pocket.

Plus I can run my home computer from my phone, so anything I can do at home I can do from my phone.

the Extended battery, 3500mAh is a must, it gives me all day use of 4G, wifi and GPS. the 1500mAh only lasted about 1/2 day.

The T-Mobile G2 is a great phone and their plans are cheaper than the other carriers. If you live in an area where they have good coverage it's hard to beat them.

My wife and kids are on Verizon, and I like push to talk, But I can go with ever who is best.

I got down to the Blackberry bold (Push to talk, supposedly rugged But older and seemingly worse connectivity), Droid pro (Latest tech, no push to talk), Iphone4 (I think I'm ruling this one out) and the Evo.

I also have the Sprint EVO 4G. In addition to what little_eddie said, I love the large screen and 8GB card that can hold a ton of music and pictures. Camera is good too. Plan includes roaming so I almost always have a data signal. I use iStockManager for streaming quotes and trading on Ameritrade. I also use the mobile web page version of Ameritrade for certain things.

Of the choices you posted I'd say the Evo.

I have an Android build VERY CLOSE to the Evo on my HD2 and like it a lot.

I'm a fan of the new Windows Phone (HTC version from t-mobile). Former iPhone user; the Windows Phone experience has blown me away. Stuff I love:

- If you use Exchange server, awesome Outlook mail/cal/contacts syncing. On the cloud; no need for ActiveSync or any of that.
- Great support for GMail, pop/imap, etc. These are treated as separate apps.
- If you are a .NET developer, why aren't you writing code for this thing? Right now. Great APIs for physics, collision, gestures, etc. Also XNA game studio (same as for XBox).
- I really like Zune. I subscribe to the Zune Pass; ~$10/month and download all the music you want.
- Microsoft actually did a nice job with UI/User Experience (for a change).
- IE on Windows Phone is much faster than Safari on iPhone, in my experience. I browse tickerforum all the time in landscape mode. Looks awesome!
- Fast and responsive overall. This may be more a feature of the HTC I have. Not sure there.
- If you use OneNote, your notebooks that you store on cloud are accessible on the WinPhone. I use this feature a ton.
- For business/enterprise, very tight SharePoint 2010 integration. I don't have SP2010 instance so haven't tested this. I am a little irritated that MS requires SP2010, but this is typical for them...
- Word/Excel/Powerpoint are native and free. Actually functional; you can edit spreadsheets you receive over email, etc.

Geek paradise.

Here's a shot from my simulator...

Dell Streak. Glorious 5" screen. Android 2.2 (which was a bit of a challenge 'cause I didn't want to wait for Dell to release it).

HTC HD2 running Android 2.2. Dual-boot - I can have Windows Mobile 6 or Android - my choice at any given time.

Flexibility = good.

Incidentally, before you ask "why", I have TomTom for WM6. It works without a cell signal. Google Nav is great but if you're out of range you're instantly ****ed. Never mind that you might have an application available on WM6 but not on Android or vice-versa.

For "everyday use" I prefer 'Droid - dramatically so.

I prefer the larger screen. It's a preference thing... the Samsung Galaxy series are nice too, the HTCs have better build quality.

Any advice for a new phone (Sprint Plan) that is rugged?

My old Sanyo RL-4930 is falling apart...I lost the antennae a few weeks ago. I've replaced the belt clip several times...

I use droid incredible but if I could change carriers I would have got the evo 4g in a heartbeat. I was using an evo rom on my incredible but now I'm back to using an AOSP rom.

Get a prepaid cheapo and use part of the $750/year you save to buy an iPod touch. Best of both worlds and no monthly fees ever again.

The reason prepaid is cheap is that it won't roam onto another carrier's network. That's all well and good if the carrier that you pre-pay with has coverage everywhere you'll ever go. But if you ever need your phone someplace where your carrier doesn't have its own network, you'll be looking at "No Service" while a phone on a real plan would still be working (and in the US, you won't even know that a phone on a real plan is actually roaming on another network).

The iPod touch is cool if you've got Wifi everywhere you want to use it for any purpose which requires connectivity, and if you'r willing to drink the iTunes Cool-Aid. But then you're still carrying two devices. Got lots of room in your pockets? smiley

If I felt the need to save money in this way, I'd buy an unlocked GSM Android phone and put a pre-paid voice-only SIM in it. That gets you the best of both worlds: A single device that's a full-up smart-phone where Wifi is available, which still works as a phone where your pre-paid carrier has network coverage. You'll also be able to switch between the GSM carriers simply by buying a different pre-paid SIM.

If you are using Verizon with a real plan you will not roam to other carriers towers either. I was having horrible call quality at my house when I can count five towers within 4 miles of me due to me being next to I-40. I got a young tech who obv knew his **** and he switched me up to a hybrid PRL using Verizon and Alltel towers. So by default you do not use other carrier's towers but you can update your PRL by phone support or going over to xda forums and learning how to do it yourself.

Picked up a Nokia N8 a week or so ago.

Absolutely gorgeous bit of kit with typical Nokia call quality and battery life as well as some innovative features in the mobile space.
Pentaband, wireless N, usb otg, bt 3.0, hdmi out and, of course, the monster camera.

Unfortunately, as is common for NOK lately, the hardware guys wrote a fat check that the software guys seem unable to cash.
I'll probably keep the device but I honestly couldn't recommend it to anyone other than diehard Nokia fans at this point.

Elop has his work cut out for him.

Great idea. Although in my case, the sim card route means going to T-mobile. Not the best coverage in our area, but may be worth checking further.
