In the midst of the publicity regarding Andrea Rossi, a NASA associate has applied for yet another LENR-related patent. The patent date of filing is listed as March 24, 2011 and date published October 20, 2011. Details of the patent application are listed here. The inventors is listed as Joseph Zawodny and the assignee is listed as “USA as represented by the Administrator of NASA.” Once again, NASA’s involvement and interest in this technology is significant. The agency first replicated the technology as far back as 1989, even though no public acknowledgement of this was forthcoming until October of this year, some 22 years later. It was NASA chief scientist Dennis Bushnell who, a month after this patent was filed, stated: “I think were almost over the “we don’t understand it” problem. I think we’re almost over the “this doesn’t produce anything useful” problem. So I think this will go forward fairly rapidly now and, if it does, this is capable of by itself completely changing geoeconomics, geopolitics and solving climate and energy.” (audio link – transcript) NASA representatives also reportedly evaluated both Andrea Rossi’s e-Cat and the device of fellow Italian Francesco Piantelli in September and Dr. George Miley reports that he has been in talks with NASA to implement his device. Brian Ahern’s association with NASA is not entirely clear but it is reported that his previous employer, Quantum Energy Technologies Corp, was the “potential customer” present with NASA representatives during the September evaluations of the Rossi and Piantelli devices.
Speaking of Piantelli, I have mentioned his name frequently in past articles as he is a very important figure in the development of cold fusion/LENR. His former research associate, Prof. Sergio Focardi, now works with Andrea Rossi and actually filed patents with him on this technology in the 1990s. A picture of the machine, or one very similar, he used to prepare nickel for his reactor was included in the Tovima article referenced above. Whether Defkalion has been licensed to use this machine, purchased the machine or the editors of the Tovima article simply took the liberty of using an image of the machine is unclear.
Nickel Prep Machine Used by Francesco Piantelli What is clear is that Prof. Francesco Piantelli has remained remarkably silent during this whole affair. Besides reports that NASA and Quantum Energy Technologies evaluated his device in September 2011, very little information is known as to the status of his work. In contrast to Rossi, who is admittedly flamboyant and has a penchant for self-promotion, Piantelli is remarkably quiet and cautious. He has filed, and obtained, numerous European patents on cold/LENR cold fusion technology going back to the 1990s (with Sergio Focardi) and more recently in 2008 and April of 2011. Although his silence can be maddening to some observers, even to his own supporters, I would not be surprised if he surfaces with something significant in the very near future. Of note, Piantelli also does not believe the mechanism of the anomalous heat production is fusion, much like Brian Ahern, NASA and even Rossi. Like Ahern, Piantelli claims he has a theoretical explanation for his reaction that fits within the bounds of current scientific models. With Brian Ahern soon to present his theory publicly, it will be interesting to see how soon after Piantelli follows suit. If not, perhaps it would be best for his associates to respectfully nudge him and inform him that the race has begun.

University of Bologna Still Willing to Work with Rossi Even Though Contract has been cancelled January 26, 2012
The University of Bologna has cancelled its contract with Andrea Rossi but it is still willing to work with the inventor. In statements published at the Italian Blog Passi22blogspot and the American Pure Energy Systems the cancellation of a contract between Rossi’s company EFA Ltd and the school’s department of physics has been confirmed.
“That I can confirm to the best of my knowledge the Contract Between the Dept of Physics and the company EFA has-been canceled because unfulfilled at the deadline and AGREED that there is no further relationship Between the company and the university based on that contract. Regards” Dario Braga
Braga is the Director of Scientific Research at the University. Note this was a Google translation and therefore totally unreliable.
Yet the school is apparently still interested in working with Rossi and testing the ecat low energy nuclear reaction device. The Department of Physics at Rossi’s alma matter is apparently willing to conduct independent tests on the ecat and study the science behind it. What has been cancelled is the 500,000 Euro contract Rossi apparently had with the department.

Rossi hints that he made one - 1MW reactor for a first customer he cannot disclose due to a strict NDA. He hints he is making another 12 for the same customer.

Andrea Rossi's E-Cat (Energy Catalyzer)
Solid State Generator or the "Endless Electric Field Generator."
Our number two technology can be described as a "solid state generator", or can be referred to by the nick name we gave it, the "Endless Electric Field Generator." It is being developed by a small company that does not want to be identified at this time. This company has developed a number of technologies, and has acquired a significant patent portfolio.
This technology works by producing a permanent electric field (the opposite of a permanent magnetic field in a permanent magnet) that does not break down. From this permanent electric field, a constant flow of electricity can be produced. Currently, the output of their prototypes is modest, only capable of powering small lights or other loads. However, they are working towards incorporating methods of increasing the surface area of the device, which will boost the current to a higher level (the voltage is already there). A trusted associate, Mark Dansie, visited the company, and has concluded the technology is indeed real, and works.
PlasmERG's Noble Gas Engine
PlasmERG is a company that is building a revolutionary engine that utilizes small charges of inert, noble gases as fuel. John Rohner, the founder of the company, alleges that the engine will be capable of producing a constant output of hundreds of horse power, and hundreds of foot pounds of torque. It will be capable of producing this level of output for months or longer, utilizing only a few dollars worth of fuel.
In addition to utilizing very little fuel, the engine is claimed to emit zero pollution into the environment, run very quietly, and require no cooling system. It can be used to power automobiles, and to turn generators to produce electricity. Also, it said to be capable of replacing electric motors in many applications. Due to its simplicity, it has far fewer components than an internal combustion engine, and should need less maintenance. With this engine in a vehicle, oil changes, radiator flushes, and fuel filter replacements will be a thing of the past -- along with fill ups of fossil fuel!
Power from CO2 and Fly Ash
The technologies offered by MP BioMass could be considered as slightly less "overtly" exotic than the others on our list. However, they are extremely significant technologies that could benefit our world in many ways. Their technologies hold the potential to manage the waste produced by burning coal, capture CO2 emissions, and in the process produce fuel and energy.
One technological solution that MP Biomass offers is a method of capturing the carbon dioxide from flue gases, to totally eliminate CO2 emissions. This is accomplished via a world-wide patented system that they assert mimics a form of artificial photosynthesis.
Their "nano-membrane pyro-gasification process" not only extracts CO2 from flue gases, but prevents other pollutants from escaping into the atmosphere. The process also captures oxygen (grade 5), and isolates hydrogen from the flue gases. This allows for the production of methanol and electricity, of which a small portion are used to keep the process going. The amount of methanol produced seems impressive, with 551 gallons being produced from each ton of carbon dioxide captured.
The methanol produced by MP BioMass's process is asserted to have a cetane rating of sixty or higher, which equates to high grade, premium fuel, able to run in an automobile without modification.
Another solution offered by MP BioMass is the ability to better manage the huge amounts of fly ash produced by coal burning power plants. They are able to extract the remaining energy content from the fly ash, along with valuable ferrous and non ferrous metals. The process also detoxifies the ash, and would dramatically reduce the quantity of fly ash put into landfills.
The technology of MP BioMass is also proven, and currently in use. It is beyond the prototype stage. Millions and millions of dollars have already been spent developing the technology, and a plant has been operating in Serbia since 2003. The company also has three smaller plants in Italy, which utilize their technology. A ten megawatt plant is planned for upstate New York, and a huge two gigawatt plant has been purchased, which will be built in Saudi Arabia. It is expected to be completed in 2015.
Defkalion
Defkalion is the Greek company that used to be partnered with Andrea Rossi, before he terminated his relationship with them during the middle of 2011. They had hoped to develop and market his revolutionary cold fusion technology around the world, except for the Americas. Now, the company claims to have developed their own nickel-hydrogen technology that is alleged not to utilize Rossi's proprietary industrial secrets.
Unlike Andrea Rossi's technology that has been tested repeatedly -- consistently showing massive excess energy production -- they have never allowed a public test of their technology. For now, they are keeping such things confidential.
If they can provide evidence that they have a working, robust Ni-H technology, they may move higher on the list of the top five technologies. Although they would be competing with Rossi, there is plenty of room on the market for a number of different cold fusion technologies. Simply put, both Defkalion and Rossi could manufacture cold fusion devices for many years, and not meet the demand that will exist.
The main claim they make is that their "Hyperion" technology is superior to the E-Cat technology. This may or may not be the case, and only time will tell if they can back up their statements with evidence. Those who have visited Defkalion (although not seeing proof of working systems) report a top notch lab, professional engineers, and lots of expensive equipment.

Humans really aren't much smarter than your typical crustacean. If one tries to climb his way out of a box, you can bet 5 others will go out of their way to pull him back down. And they don't do it out of concern for their fellow crustaceans. They do it because it is funny to watch one fall.
These types of technologies will be phased in gradually. Long after generic cold fusion devices are ubiquitous, I won't expect any of the jokers on this thread to show any remorse over the progress they helped slow down with their petty attempts at humor and pointless skepticism. And yes, it is pointless to be a skeptic of any new technology unless you personally have money on the table.

I don't see how anyone is slowing down progress by demanding evidence. Isn't the whole point of science that we don't have to take things on faith? The burden of proof is on the inventor, and extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof. I think that's all anyone is saying here. Just MHO.
