I stopped at the grocery store to get some frozen strawberries this evening ($4.99 for 1.5lbs, ugh) and found pork shoulder roasts at $.99lb!!! I'm happy if I can find them for $2.29lb. I know I'll never see that price EVER again so we bought them all!

Food inflation cannot be maintained for long in this economy.

It is too easy for consumers to substitute cheaper brands and goods for more expensive ones, use quantity discounts, and substitute cheaper foods for more expensive ones.

If the expensive stuff sits on the shelves the stores won't reorder.

The market in ruthlessly efficient in the grocery area. Vote with your dollars--it is the only vote that actually counts.

Without wage inflation this bubble is gonna burst.

The sick thing is someone is seriously buying up commodity futures with money printed out of Ben's ass.

Was in Puerto Rico for two weeks, and the price of food there is cheaper then here in the states; particularly here in Florida where I am visiting family. Why is that? For all the food in PR is shipped due to the internationalization of food- ie. eggs are from Ohio; garlic is from China, apples from new zealand.

So why such a drastic price differential? Is it because the Latinos won't put up with Mr. Amigo grocer gouging the people, and they will actively take to the streets over the price of food. It's not enough to just vote with your dollars. It's too cool of a drink of water.

America needs to take back it's country. Having a "fair market"-is important for everyone. The latin culture on a daily basis struggles in the open market to make the price of a pineapple at the market- a price that is consistent for the market. The vender is aware that it can't get $.30 centavos from the gringos, while he is paid $.20 centavos from the locals--for the gringos and the locals alike require there to be price stability.

When food prices are inflated, then the market is producing only for the top feeders. The locals will not allow that, as much as the gringos do not allow that. That is the expectation.

The major food cartels are enjoying this inflationary period, and it's not going to stop till there is pressure being placed on the cartel, by both the elites, and the middle class, and lower class. Everyone stands to loose by this.

Also, I am not a proponent of going out and growing my own food, and all that. I am not. I prefer to expend my energy on art work, reading books, and a thriving business. I think we need to review our thoughts about this. I deem that if we continue on this, then we leave ourselves open to be like the intellectuals in China who were working on farms during the Maoist regime. No thanks.

I think this analysis needs to be qualified. For me, there has been zero inflation since pork went up 35% last summer. Pork (loin) is still dirt cheap, relatively at 50-27% of beef. I can also still find chicken brests on sale at my local HEB grocery store fore $1.25/pound about once per month. That is insanely cheap!!!

For those who have complained about their homeowners insurance you need to call your agent. This happened to me last year as well. I called and complained and told them to reduce it or I would go somewhere else and take my auto insurance away as well. They called me within the week with a price even lower than what I had been paying before the price increase! Go figure.

I learned that you need to check on this every year. Call around and get estimates to make sure your cost are online with what they should be. It is a hassle I know but from personal experience it has saved me hundreds of dollars.

@If - that doesn't work very well here, where many of the big insurers pulled out after the last hurricane heavy season.

Not trying to derail from food, but USAA gives out dividend checks when they make a profit. So yesterday we get a refund check, about the same amount of money they raised our premium! They are probably right about the price to rebuild if materials are that much more expensive. We did our own general contracting and most of our labor, probably saved at least 30% probably more like 40%. Much of the materials we bought at auctions or took advantage of Craigs list and close out sales.

So to keep my post on the food subject, someone earlier mentioned how thin the Cheerios boxes had become. I bought some the other day when they were on sale for my grandson, hadn't noticed until it was mentioned but they are definately way thinner than they used to be. Noticed they are 12.25 oz, didn't they used to be 14-16 oz?

The OJ price increases are due to supply shortages from weather and disease related issues. Demand for OJ has been on a slow decline for years due to the demographics of juice drinkers and competing new juice beverages.

I posted elsewhere that our recent re-stocking activity was notable for the absent expected price increases. Rice wasn't on the list, though, we're still at about three-year supply.

That said, our local grocery had chicken thighs on sale for SEVENTY-NINE cent/lb. The freezer is now full!

(Oh, and the trout in the pond now average about 3 lbs. Haven't computed the cost/lb in food and electricity, though...)

I've posted this before. $45 Emergency Menu for 4-6 people.

With todays prices it is probably closer to $100.00.

I think it would be fun to design a healthy menu for a family costing as little as possible.
