Combined 9.08 only Asimov has me beat.

California has the nation's highest statewide sales tax and second highest when combined with local levies, in the United States, according to a new report from the Tax Foundation.

*California is one of three states (Utah and Virginia aren't in the top 10) that levy a statewide, mandatory local sales tax, which the Tax Foundation combines in the state sales tax. Some other sources list California's statewide rate as 7.25%.
Californians currently are paying an extra 1%, which is due to expire July 1, which would drop California to 8th on this list. Gov. Jerry Brown wants the legislature to put a 5-year extension of the extra sales tax, as well as the income tax and vehicle license tax, before the voters in a special election.

In the Seattle metro area (King County), 9.5% sales tax. (we have no Income tax, but only by a hair breadth... "income tax for the rich" was voted down recently, but I'm sure they will try again). @ Costco ~5 miles north of me, in Snohomish Co, 7.7% sales tax.

I wonder how the states rank when you combine sales, income AND property taxes

Tennessee looks rough until you take into account there is no income tax in Tn

Total taxation is what matters - not just sales tax.

And you can control how much you buy to some degree so you can limit your exposure to that high sales tax, whereas it's difficult to have a normal job and avoid the income tax.

Of course, they're constantly fighting in Tennessee over having an income tax. The ten years I lived there I think it was an issue in every single election cycle.

Yay Delaware...we're #47. PA isn't too bad either...at #30. Property taxes are what kills PA, at least in the eastern and western parts of the state..

Also keep in mind corporate rates on income and property as well, as they factor into jobs.

Theoretically, New Hampshire should be the place to go, but I'm thinking the corporate income tax and property taxes drive businesses away...

(What would be really helpful would be a site that generates a 'liberty index' for each state, based on their taxation (both state-and-local) as well as liberty issues (gun laws, eminent domain protections, etc)).

The problem with the Tax Foundation's chart is that it doesn't take into account total taxes.
What I'd like to see is an interactive website that allowed you to plug income by source (from job, retirement, interest, dividends, etc), add in property taxes, motor vehicle tags/taxes, and then allow you to put in estimated amounts spent on other purchases - food, gas, clothing, etc. That would be the only way to get a clear picture on where the best state/county/city would be for you to live in based on your specific circumstances.
Many of us on this website are savers so a higher local/state sales tax doesn't hurt us as much as a high state income/dividend/interest tax does. My wife and I don't buy a lot of stuff so I favor a high sales tax and lower property taxes.
And I really noticed a difference when it came to automobile sales taxes. I was looking for a car in CA, but bagged that idea after looking at the state auto sales tax rates. Granted, I paid 6% to Florida and then another 1% of the first $5000 to Highlands county but that was a LOT cheaper than the >9% taxes that CA wanted. And FL has two more things that I like - no vehicle inspections and cheap renewal tags (fees are weight based only). Renewal on our tags is $71.15/yr for each car, the highest amount charged in FL because both vehicles weight >3500 lbs.

This article is geared toward military pensions, but it's got other useful state tax information in it: http://www.militaryhub.com/article.cfm?i....
