My boys went to an older high school just up the street, Churchill, which was built originally in the 70s and was a mega-school of its day. But with the additions the district has made to it within the last two or three years, I bet they spent three times in constant dollars what the original school cost. Including a ginormous gym, of course.

But that's nothing. I have driven by Smithson Valley High School up in Spring Branch for years, but from the road it is mostly obscured by trees and I've never paid much attention. But driving on 46 from a different direction than normal the other day, I got a good glimpse of the campus. Unbelievable. Like a set for a 24th-century city on Next Gen or something.

Then driving further on the road that the students take every day -- the compound campus having one entrance and only one -- I couldn't help but notice a sign mounted to the barbed wire fence... "Pregnant? Need Help? Call..."
