Man I wouldn't want to get arrested in Syria. Pretty sure those ****ers love torture.

I heard an interview a couple years back about how the Cheney administration would send terrorism suspects caught in the U.S., over to Syria to soften them up. One guy was relating his story. Got stopped at an airport in the U.S., his name was on a watch list, happened to match the name of some one else. Didn't matter that the guy was like an upstanding bio-physicist. They flew him to Syria. He got the kind of special treatment you'd never want to hear about. That lasted like 2 years. Then I guess they finally decided he wasn't actually a terrorist and sent him back to the U.S.

Thousands attending funeral for slain pro-democracy protesters call for "freedom" as police fire tear gas.
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middle....
Quote:
Thousands of people gathering in Syria's southern city of Daraa to mourn the deaths of two people killed by security forces have called for "revolution" in the country.

Police sealed off the city and fired tear gas to disperse the crowds who had turned out for the funerals of Wissam Ayyash and Mahmoud al-Jawabra, two of five people killed when security forces opened fire on protesters a day earlier.

Mazen Darwish, a prominent Syrian rights activist, said police had sealed the city with people being allowed out but unable to enter and other activists reported dozens of arrests.

The latest crackdown follows protests on Friday where, inspired by the revolts sweeping through the Arab world, demonstrators had called for political freedoms and an end to corruption in Syria.

Three to four thousand people leaving the city's Omari mosque after midday prayers chanted "God, Syria, Freedom" and slogans accusing the president's family of corruption, residents said.

But in the most violent response in years to protests against Syria's ruling elite, five people were killed when security forces opened fire on the protest.

I heard about this guy initially in a radio interview, so I had some of the facts wrong. But I just did a quick Google on "U.S. citizen, tortured in Syria" and this was the first of 67,100 results. Turns out he was a Canadian citizen, telecom engineer. Anyway, it's a pretty horrifying story.

Thanks for posting the vids, Padrino. I'm heading to Syria in 3 weeks and while I've been checking the news fairly regularly, I hadn't realized things were broiling in Damascus; just the south. Nice to know Tickerforum continues to be the place for breaking news. ;)

Witnesses and activists say hundreds of Syrians are protesting in a tense southern city where security forces earlier killed at least five protesters this week.

The witnesses in Daraa say protesters are angry about mass arrests and are calling for officials involved in the violence to be fired. They spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution.

Activists in Damascus in contact with Daraa residents said police fired tear gas and bullets in the air to disperse the protesters. The report could not be immediately confirmed.

Report: Syria importing Hezbollah to quash protests
Israel HaYom (Hebrew) is quoting Syrian opposition groups, saying that Syria is bringing in Hezbollah to help stop the protests spreading throughout the country.

According to the reports, thousands of Hezbollah members have been brought into the epicenter of protests in Daraa, which is now under curfew.

Syria's Al Watan blamed the protests on "Palestinian extremists and members of radical Islamic organizations from the refugee camps in southern Syria."

The Daraa protesters have shattered a statue of former Syrian leader Hafez al-Assad.

There are also reports that the Kurdish minority is starting to protest as well in the northern town of Kamishli.

Officials Deny Closing Jordan-Syria Border
Syria, March 22, 2011
An official security source on Monday denied reports that the Jordanian - Syrian border crossing in Ramtha, north of Jordan, has been closed in either direction.

The source added in statements to Ammon News that travelers and traders are crossing the border in both directions without any obstacles or delay.

He reported that Jordanians traveling back to the kingdom from Syria have not faced any problems, stressing that additional facilitations are provided to ease their crossing of the border amidst heavy Syrian security presence in the southern Syrian city of Daraa.

Travelers with shared last names of families residing in both Jordan and Syria are warned against traveling to Syria, joint Syrian-Jordanian border official source told Ammon News, following violent events that shook the city of Daraa during peaceful protests there calling for political reform.

The security source denied the report.
