All - Does anyone know of a good source to get a chart of student loan growth over the last 30 years?

I am checking the St. Louis Fed's Research site, but I don't see it

http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/

Actually, I just found this... WHOA

http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/gra....[id]=TOTALGOV]

Thank you!!

Wow, what's going on? This can't be all newly issued debt, can it?

Right, I guess they made Sallie Mae the only place to get those loans.

Now you know why I've been ranting about this for months.

Yeah, definitely following you on every consumer credit release, but this graph is just silly.

It's the only place there's more debt acceptance. On people too young to understand.

THAT ought to be a capital offense, and the hangings should take place in public.

Is there a way to graph public+private student loan debt? I'm curious how much has been shifted from private to public compared to how much its just increasing overall.

No, but there was no shift - that's all new loans. Current loans can still be carried but all new ones are through the government.

Does this really show an expansion of total student debt, or does it just show a consolidation by the federal government of the said debt?

Or put differently maybe this same debt would have been created regardless but thanks to new laws, it is all owned by the goberment.

.Gov snapped up most all loan issuance around the time of gov't motors.
Ain't that a hoot?

All NEW student loans are now Govenment loans that you can NEVER default on. You can not include them into a BK and they will seize your bank accounts, tax returns and garnish your wages to get the money from you. This was put into law with the 2000+ page Obama Care bill. A health Care law that includes student loan laws, makes sense to me....NOT!

I like how on the ed.gov site they let you know in the first bullet point the best way to cancel your debt is to die. Becoming totally and permanently disabled is second.

Maybe the government wants all these student loans as a form of collateral. Since it is practically impossible to default on them they are very high quality assets.

this is just reflective of the changes in federal student loans that they have to be held by the government and not private banks. Previously, we (.gov) were just backing the loans.
