I am a long-time reader of Denninger, but a new user of the forum. Had a bad feeling about the market in 2008-sold all stocks in my retirement accounts and rolled into cash--that's the good news. The bad news is that I never got back into the market so I have lost a lot of growth in the past couple of years. Now it seems everything I would be interested in buying is at or near the all-time high. I have no idea why this bull market is sustaining. I feel sure the market is being manipulated, but that's another discussion. In the mean time, I am earning nothing on a sizable account and I am afraid that my account will be diminished over time between no earnings and inflation. I am about 10 years away from retirement. I am usually pretty financially savy, but I can't seem to figure this out. I have talked to financial advisors, read tons of financial blogs and publications, etc. I just can't seem to get to a solution that my gut tells me is a good one. With everything in cash right now, do I continue to sit it out and hope for a big market downturn and then buy? Is there something stable I should consider buying now? I am looking for ideas from Karl Denninger and/or his readers because he is the only sane voice of truth and reason out there about politics, finance and just about every other subject and I believe that most of his followers are the same way. I understand that "NO MATERIAL HERE CONSTITUTES "INVESTMENT ADVICE" NOR IS IT A RECOMMENDATION TO BUY OR SELL ANY FINANCIAL INSTRUMENT". I am just looking for some ideas from the readers of this blog. Thanks very much for your help.

I'm rather long the dollar and rather short on-balance everything else right now, but none of it is a committed position nor for anything more than a short-term trade which might go away literally Monday morning.

All of it's real recent too...

I think any thinking person has this problem right now.

At this point I think cash is probably the best place, and in USD. Wait for another downturn in the market and then pile back into stocks for the next inflationary wave that will follow. You might get luck and be able to buy Silver under $20 and Gold under $1400.

The stock market will rise as the dollar crashes back down, probably to new all-time lows. Have 10% or so in metals and maybe consider moving out of USD and into AUD or CHF.

Yes, you missed the move in metals, stock market and big currency moves but I think to start now would be a big mistake IMHO.

Investing right now is a bad idea in general. Trading, however, is as profitable as ever.

If you can spend the time to trade actively and you have successfully in the past, you can probably do ok.

If you mean to buy XYZ and sit on it for 5 years, checking it every couple of months, now is a VERY bad time.

Trading at the moment is extremely profitable. On a percentage basis in my spec account I've had two back-to-back weeks with a total return (between them) of 28% (!)

That's beyond ridiculously good (and beyond safe limits by far) and as such a lot of risk has come off, but the point remains that the markets are behaving in a fashion that makes profitable trading quite possible.

Investing, however, is extremely dangerous here. In those accounts I choose not to monitor and which are "pure investment" accounts I'm 100% cash.

Many top investors feel as you do. Trading benefits from the kind of volatility that this uncertainty brings. Understand that 'trading' for most TF'ers means eyes glued to the screens, minutes, hours and days all matter. If you are going to trade start small with barely enough to make you care, read Karls 'Come to Jesus Ticker' even if your not religous.

For longer term investment lasting days or more, there are few 'safe' choices.
Even Geitner is raising questions about the full faith. If your're ten years from retirement cash is about as safe as you can get right now. A small amouunt for education can be fun, but dont blow your retirement. The bottom line is that markets are whacky right now and may get whackier.
