Capture confirmed!

The Earth is so beautiful. I keep having to avert my eyes away from it in order to pay attention to the Dragon.

Here we go...

Now lined up in the preinstall position.

FWIW, capturing a capsule with the Canadarm2 has been done before; the Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle has been captured and docked the same way.

Wait a second... this thing (Dragon) has solar panels on it for power?! How long do they intend that this thing stay in space?!

It was up for... 3(?) days before it got to the ISS.

Quote:
For its first mission to the International Space Station, SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft will use deployable solar arrays as its primary power source for running sensors, driving heating and cooling systems, and communicating with SpaceX's Mission Control Center and the Space Station.

Dragon's solar arrays generate up to 5,000 watts of power - enough to power over 80 standard light bulbs.

The solar arrays, shielded by protective covers during launch, deploy just minutes after Dragon separates from the Falcon 9 second stage, as it heads towards its rendezvous with the Space Station.

While many commercial satellites and NASA missions such as the Hubble Space telescope use solar arrays, Dragon will be the first commercial American transport vehicle to do so.

Past American spacecraft like Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Shuttle used fuel cells or battery packs. Fuel cells are limited by the amount of chemical reactants (typically oxygen and hydrogen) that the vehicle can carry. Batteries alone are limiting due to their mass and the amount of power they can carry.

Solar energy provides a key benefit - long-term power. Combining Dragon's solar arrays with a compact and efficient battery pack provides a reliable and renewable source of power.

When in the sun, Dragon's solar arrays recharge the battery pack, and the charged batteries provide power while Dragon passes through the Earth's shadow. With solar panels, Dragon will have the power it needs for longer trips, whether to the Space Station or future missions to Mars.

Dragon's deployable solar arrays were developed from scratch by a small team of SpaceX engineers.

To ensure they will survive the harsh environment of space, our engineers put the solar arrays through hundreds of hours of rigorous testing including thermal, vacuum, vibration, structural and electrical testing.

SpaceX conducts most of these tests in-house. This video shows a solar array full deployment test using testing equipment developed by SpaceX as part of a NASA Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) milestone:

After testing was complete, the solar arrays headed to SpaceX's Cape Canaveral launch site for final integration.

The solar arrays and fairing covers that protect the folded arrays during launch have since been installed on the Dragon spacecraft in preparation for their first flight to the International Space Station.

That last article is quite good. Goes into some detail about the owner wanting to make everything as simple and reusable as possible, including the safety/ejection system for problems on the pad.

Instead of SRB's to blow the crew compartment off and then have it come down on chutes, it uses (or will use) throttleable engines so that it can actually land under it's own power.

It's deorbiting right now. The CANADARM just released it. On live Nasa TV.

Edit: whoops, sorry... NASA was playing recorded video of the arm release. Deorbit burn is in 13 minutes. Spashdown in about an hour.

That is Elon Musk in the front row in the black shirt and coffee cup. At one point you could see him pull out a smartphone and start fiddling with it. When I was watching it live one of his tweets about the spashdown came thru shortly after that.

Also, note how sparse and minimalist SpaceX mission control is compared to the NASA versions. SpaceX looks like a startup in action, compared to the luxury box suites at NASA...

"All mission objectives were successfully completed."

SpaceX is only 10 years old. They started with a clean sheet of paper. They've only spent ~$1 billion over the entire 10 years they've existed. And now they've flow a successful cargo delivery mission to the ISS. This is an amazing accomplishment.

To Elon: Congratulations! Now please hurry up and IPO this company so I can buy some. smiley

I'm serious. There's no other company I'd rather own a bit of, and this isn't necessarily because I expect to profit from such an investment either.
