On December 14, Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Goldberger submitted a subpoena to Twitter requesting user info and IP addresses for several users, and also displayed his lack of tech savvy by asking for the account info of a couple of hashtags -- keywords used on Twitter.

Goldberger says the information is needed pursuant to a criminal investigation, and orders Twitter not to "disclose the existence of this request." It appears to have been leaked, and you can read it below.

You can send an email to Goldberger at the address at the bottom of the document and ask him what his office is up to, but you really should keep it polite -- he seems pretty litigious.

Occupy protester 'banned' from flight home for Christmas
http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news....

Quote:
A member of the Occupy London protests was stopped from boarding his flight home for Christmas after he was found carrying anarchist literature, it has been claimed.

The demonstrator, who is part of the group occupying the empty UBS building dubbed the "Bank of Ideas", said he was told he would not be allowed on the Ryanair flight to Malaga because the pilot feared he might distribute leaflets and "upset other passengers".

John Charles Culatto, 34, claimed he was approached by police at Bristol International Airport who told him they had seen him "acting suspiciously" on the airport's CCTV system when he stopped to talk to fellow travellers.

He said he went to airport security an hour before his flight was due to depart, where staff found posters in his bag linked to the anarchist group Crimethinc and refused to allow him through until they had contacted the airline. He claimed he overheard security staff who were examining his luggage using the word "terrorism".

When he finally got to the boarding gate, he claimed he was prevented from boarding by staff. Mr Culatto said: " that because of the very remote possibility I could distribute leaflets on the plane and upset people, the captain had decided not to take me aboard."

A spokesman for Servisair, which manages the departure gates, said Mr Culatto was stopped because he arrived at the gate after it closed because of the time it took to clear security. He said the decision not to allow him to fly was taken by the airline.

Ryanair called the allegations "complete and utter rubbish".

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that "a 34-year-old man was delayed by airport security". He said: "We sent some officers at the airport's request but they were not required."

I was listening to Karl's podcast on OWS tonight and a thought occurred to me. As I understand it, CA allows for Ballot Initiatives. It sure would be interesting if the protesters got one on the ballot that cut Oakland PD's pay or made them pay the unfunded liability in their pension fund. That's "peaceful", right?

Lawrence O'Donnell To NYPD: Fire Officers Who Interfered With Journalists At Occupy Wall Street
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/29....

Quote:
Lawrence O'Donnell called for the New York Police Department to fire certain officers who he called "thugs with badges," on his MSNBC show Wednesday night. O'Donnell was referring to officers who violated the force's "non-interference" order during altercations with members of the press who were covering Occupy Wall Street in mid-November.

According to a Capital New York article, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly reissued the NYPD's "non-interference" order, after multiple New York news organizations complained about the treatment of journalists who were covering Occupy Wall Street at Zuccotti Park in November.

As the NYPD cleared Zuccotti Park of protesters, officers prohibited journalists from entering the area, therefore prohibiting them from covering the story. Members of the press tweeted "media blackout," and others who tried to get passed officers said they were "roughed up" by officers' heavy hands.

Days later, some journalists were beaten and arrested when they tried to cover Occupy Wall Street protesters. O'Donnell reread the order, which was reportedly reread to all officers in the force.

Members of the service who unreasonably interfere with media access to incidents or who intentionally prevent or obstruct the photographing or videotaping of news in public places will be subject to disciplinary action. Members of the service will not interfere with the videotaping or photographing of incidents in public places. Intentional interference constitutes censorship. Media access to demonstrations on private property will not be impeded by the Department unless an owner or representative indicates press is not permitted. The media will be given access as close to the activity as possible with a clear line of site and within hearing range of the incident.

O'Donnell described the only way he believed the police force should deal "with the outlaw cops who willfully or ignorantly violate" the "non-interference" order. "They must be fired...The NYPD could fire every one of the thugs with badges who have attacked reporters this year and not miss them for a minute," O'Donnell said.

He added, "the actual, real crime rate would drop instantly because these police criminals would no longer be assaulting and battering the people of New York and New York reporters."

14-Year-Old Occupier Arrested at Iowa Democratic Party Headquarters
http://motherjones.com/mojo/2011/12/occu....

inline

Quote:
Occupy Iowa continued a string of protests on Thursday, this time outside Democratic Party headquarters in Des Moines, resulting in the arrests of 12 people. Among them was 14-year-old Frankie Hughes, who was released into her father's custody at the scene and may face a juvenile court proceeding. The overall tenor of the arrests was peaceful and symbolic.

When the protesters first arrived, Iowa Democratic Party chairwoman Sue Dvorsky and executive director Norm Sterzenbach came out to greet them. The two party officials spent about 20 minutes expressing their frustrations with what they considered to be a distraction, but also their willingness to listen to the protesters' grievances. Then they went back inside to prepare for the January 3 caucuses, and soon called the police.

The protesters originally planned to demonstrate outside Barack Obama's campaign headquarters, after having focused their attention Wednesday on Mitt Romney. They changed their plans after an impromptu early morning protest at Ron Paul's headquarters, and after hearing that Obama's headquarters had closed for the day. At the new location, about 40 protesters focused their attention on Obama's ties to Wall Street and his support of the National Defense Authorization Act, which codified the indefinite detention of terrorist suspects arrested on US soil.

"We are here to listen to you. We are not trying to ignore you," Dvorsky had told protesters before the arrests. "But we don't know what you want," she added, expressing frustration that, after eight protesters were arrested at the same location 10 days prior, some occupiers had turned down a subsequent offer to meet with her and instead showed up to protest on Thursday unannounced. When protesters asked Dvorsky to make a phone call to the White House to request that the president meet with Occupy Iowa, she refused, calling the demand unrealistic. "You guys are working outside of electoral politics," she added. "We work inside of it. That's the best answer I can give you."

That didn't satisy veteran antiwar activist Frank Cordaro, who was arrested after he refused a police order to move to the sidewalk. "There's nothing that Sue can say to us that would be an adequate response to the concerns that we have," he told me as he sat with two other protesters blocking a headquarters door. "Whatever the message is, we're coming after the president. He betrayed us."

Emily Allison, a Des Moines protester who was also arrested, agreed. She campaigned for Obama in 2008 but doesn't plan to vote for him next year. "When he won me over, I remember him specifically telling us that he wanted the people to hold him accountable, because the government is the people's government," she said. "I'm not satisfied with the job that he's done, so I think it is important for us to let him know that we have demands that need to be met if he wants to be reelected."

After the protest and arrests, Occupy Iowa outlined its specific demands for Obama in a press release: end home forclosures to ease the mortgage crisis, stop taking campaign money from Wall Street, end indefinite detentions of terrorism suspects, and "start listening to the issues of the 99% instead of the issues of Wall Street."

Thursday's 12 arrests bring the week's tally to 27. Everyone so far has been released on the days of their arrests. Because 14-year-old Hughes—who was previously arrested in October when police cleared out an Occupy Des Moines campsite at the State Capitol—is a juvenile, police allowed her to leave the Democratic Party headquarters with her father. The other arrestees were taken to a nearby processing center. Among that group was Hughes' mother, Renee Espeland. According to Espeland, the police said her daughter's trespassing violation may be referred to a juvenile court in the coming weeks.

"I'm very nervous because the cop who arrested me acted like my father wasn't a good father because he allowed me to speak my mind," Hughes said. "I am nervous that people aren't going to understand that my family isn't bad. They're just supportive."

Before police arrived on Thursday, the protesters (including some other kids) expressed their frustrations with Obama and Wall Street through a bit of performance:

Hundreds Storm Police Barricades And Retake Zuccotti Park
http://www.addictinginfo.org/2011/12/31/....

Quote:
Let it never be said that Occupy Wall St. is not without a flair for the dramatic. Shortly before the ball dropped in Times Square, hundreds of protesters swarmed over the unprepared police presence at Zuccotti Park. You will recall that Bloomberg’s Army, the NYPD, forcefully removed the encampment for “safety and health” reasons and has since barricaded the entire PUBLIC park to keep any occupiers from returning.

So much for that. The police tried to hold the line with unconfirmed arrests and confirmed pepper spray to no avail. The protesters knocked the barricades down and stacked them high enough to stand above the crowd. The police have pulled back presumably since they do not have enough manpower to clear the park.

And yes, the drum circle is back and so is the OWS “bat signal”.

There’s the start of your New Year 1%. The 99% haven’t gone away and they’re just getting started.

UPDATE 12:35 AM: The crowd has left Zuccotti before the police were able to rally and are currently marching on Broadway. One protester was seen carrying a piece of the metal barricade over his head.

UPDATE 12:45 AM: The police have finally mobilized. Attempting to corral the spontaneous march from the park.

UPDATE 12:50 AM: The impromptu march walked down to the WTC construction site and circled back to Zuccotti Park. There is a significant police presence. Batons are drawn and mounted police are present. No riot gear as yet.

UPDATE 1:12 AM: The motorized scooter cops are attempting to herd the protesters with predictable results. Several people knocked over. Wouldn’t I get arrested for doing that?

US President Barack Obama signs controversial NDAA into law
http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/31....

Quote:
President Barack Obama signed the controversial National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law earlier today in Hawaii. CNN reports Barack Obama "reluctantly signed a defense authorization bill, saying he was concerned about some in Congress who want to restrict options used by counterterrorism officials."

Even before the bill was signed by Obama, there were mixed feelings on NDAA. The bill only has a 2 percent approval rating on a poll conducted by OpenCongress.com. Only 8 people support the bill out of 395 voters. Another poll, of 397 people, conducted by PopVox gives the bill a 9 percent approval rating.

One of the more controversial aspects of the bill involves the ability for the president to detain United States' citizens. According to The International Business Times, "The bill affirms and codifies the U.S. President's authority to indefinitely detain in military custody anyone, including U.S. citizens, suspected of terrorism or supporting terrorists."

In a statement released after the signing of the bill, Obama says, "I want to clarify that my Administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens. Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a Nation." Even though Obama signed the bill he does not agree with everything that's included in the bill. "I have signed this bill despite having serious reservations with certain provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation, and prosecution of suspected terrorists," Obama said.

CBS news reports, "If Mr. Obama violates any of the provisions in the bill, Congress could challenge the White House in court, which would have the final say in any dispute." The $662 billion bill also includes tough sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program and allocates money for the military. Sponsored by Republican Representative from California, Howard McKeon, the Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act on November 30th, House on December May 26th. Changes were made to the original House bill in the Senate. The House passed the changes on December 14th. The Senate approved their changes on December 15th. The bill was introduced on April 13th.

Get Ready fot the Co-Op: from http://caucuses.desmoinesregister.com/20....

Dear Representative Wasserman Schultz,

The Democratic party has held the White House since 2008 and had a Democratic majority in Congress for two years. During that time President Obama and the Democratic Party put the agenda of Wall Street and the Corporate 1% first, over the needs of 99% of the country. Your leadership failed us. You must do better in 2012.

We want to meet with you tomorrow afternoon at the Occupy Caucus Headquarters at 504 E. Locust. Please contact Stephen Toothman at 515-480-5682 by 6pm tonight with your reply.

For a more just and democratic society,

Also from that article (gimee, gimee, gimee):

“The problems this country faces – unemployment, housing crisis, a revenue crisis, not taxing Wall Street and millionaires and billionaires enough ot pay for the social programs this country needs, a military empire overextended overseas – those are bipartisan problems,” Goodner said. “That’s a failure of leadership from both political parties.”

Occupy the Rose Parade: 5,000 Protesters, Giant Octopus Fail to Make Live TV
http://blogs.laweekly.com/informer/2012/....

Quote:
Apparently the 70-foot octopus float carried by an estimated 5,000 Occupy L.A. protesters at the end of today's Rose Parade wasn't awesome enough for KTLA, the premiere local station covering the event.

Reporters gushed over marching bands, floral arrangements and even a police horse brigade led by LAPD Chief Charlie Beck. But after float No. 43 had passed the finish line, the cameras shut off.

"Raw video" of the unofficial Occupy entry has been relegated to a corner of KTLA's website, because...

... the station is surely aware of the immense national (and international) interest in the parade-ending spectacle -- Occupy's much-anticipated answer to carrying its last three months of momentum into the new year.

Unlike the usual motley crew of nutty picketers at the end of the parade, the Occupy the Rose Parade endeavor was thousands-strong, with 250 feet of visuals. Aside from Octupy, protesters carried two huge U.S. Constitution scrolls, cardboard houses tagged with "foreclosure" and a "1 percenter" in a throne. More from City News Service:

Quote:
Among the demonstrators was a brass band, playing the national anthem and "The Mexican Hat Dance.''

The chant "We are the 99 percent'' reverberated over the strains of marching bands in the official parade.

Many demonstrators carried signs that played on the parade's theme "Imagine,'' reminiscent of the John Lennon song. One said "Just Imagine No War.'' Another: "Imagine No Greed.''

The demonstrators had their own "safety'' guards -- at least 100 of them in lime-green vests labeled ``99,'' who said they were there to help diffuse any problems along the parade route.

Newsworthy, no doubt. Yet KTLA's official Rose Parade coverage played it safe, instead oohing and ahhing over floats like the Natural Balance Pet Foods float, a waterway on wheels that showcased the talents of Tilman the surfing dog. Newscasters were tickled over the prowess of the driver, who had to maneuver the 150-foot float around sharp turns.

A contributing factor to the Occupy snub may have been that occupiers' intentions today weren't all feel-good: More than just another general anti-bankster protest on a national stage, the Rose Parade demonstration was an occupation of the popular Pasadena event itself.

Organizer Mark Lipman told City News that "the march would spotlight the role Wells Fargo Bank -- a Rose Parade sponsor -- had in the home foreclosure crisis."

KTLA also notoriously shut off aerial coverage of the LAPD raid of Occupy L.A. in the wee hours of December 1, so as not to screw with police strategy.

I think the Occupiers should continue making noise out-of-doors and making life a living, stinking, hell for all the 1% enablers (cops, and others who have sold their liberty for security). The Occupy ranks will swell as the economy worsens.

BLOOMBERG'S NYPD CARRY FORTH WITH NEW PHASE OF OWS ERADICATION

inline

The NYPD has raided the Globalrevolution TV offices and evicted the fledgling alternative media organization from their space citing conditions 'Imminently Perilous To Life'. NOTE: This was the only eviction carried out in the same building.

http://globalrevolution.tv/ is widely recognized as a key central hub consolidated webcasting of live Occupy actions from mulitple locaitons across the United States and worldwide.

The action appears targeted at silencing the organization responsible for spreading the word of the Occupy movement as an alternative to the widespread main-stream media blackout that exists around the same subject.
