Your American orange juice is a Frankenstein-like, re-animated product of engineering and science, unfortunately.

http://consumerist.com/2011/07/oj-flavor....

Quote:
There's a dirty secret in your glass of orange juice. Even though it says "not from concentrate," it probably sat in a large vat for up to year with all the oxygen removed from it. This allows it to be preserved and dispensed all year-round. Taking out all the O2 also gets rid of all the flavor. So the juice makers have to add the flavors back in using preformulated recipes full of chemicals called "flavor packs." Mmm, delicious, fresh-squeezed ethyl-butyrate!

Quote:
Juice companies therefore hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that formulate perfumes for Dior and Calvin Klein, to engineer flavor packs to add back to the juice to make it taste fresh.

If this is the type of thing that bothers you, buying OJ from the store in May through June is the only way to ensure that most of the juice is from fresh Valencia oranges. The rest of the year it's reflavored sugar water from a tank farm.

Everyone loves to hate on American Apparel, but they're Made in the USA:

Quote:
American Apparel bases its manufacturing in an 800,000-square-foot (74,000 m2) factory in downtown Los Angeles, California. The company also owns and operates its own fabric dye house, garment dye house, and knitting facility, all based in Los Angeles.[20][21] American Apparel has decided not to outsource its labor, paying factory workers an average of over twelve dollars an hour

From the wikipedia page for orange juice:

"Tropicana and Simply Orange use a mix of domestic and foreign stock). "

Read the whole page - it says the same thing as the above link.

That makes sense since Brazil's seasons are opposite ours.

Jotapay....That article is typical strawman attack propaganda trying to discredit anything other than picking an orange off a tree growing in the Garden of Eden and sqeezing the juice into your mouth with nothing but lily white hands.

The first thing to understand is that the distribution and marketing apparatus in this country determines that many types of perishable products need to be pasteurized to make them palatable and safe for consumption. You can do fresh juice without the pasteurization but the shelf life would be minimal limiting its distribution to local use and the flavor would be variable to the oranges from which it came and to the time of year it was harvested. This does not make for an affordable nor consistent product.

Secondly, the orange juice you buy whether concentrate or not from concentrate is a blended product made from different types of oranges whose maturities come at different times of the year. The later maturity oranges are higher quality because they stay on the tree longer and mother nature makes it so. The early season oranges not so much. Juice plants are expensive manufacturing facilites and therefore the longer they can run during the year the lower the cost of production for the finsished product. The orange harvesting season runs about 6-7 months.

The not from concentrate juice is lightly pasteurized and fast chilled to be stored in tanks ready for blending and packaging as needed. The O2 is removed to preserve flavor and limit bacterial growth. The pastuerization process uses heat and this process drive off the volatile organic compounds that compose a measure of the fresh flavor components. It also helps drive off some not so flavorful compounds as well. These compounds are captured and recondensed back into the flavor essences as oils. Since they comprise many different oils these are then seperated into the individual flavor components.
Using these original flavor essences from the juice itself the individual brands formulate a flavor pack that gives their juice a signature flavor that is both consistant and unique to their brand. It is important to know that this flavor pack is derived from the juice to begin with and is adjusted constantly to accomdate the ever changing quality of the multi seasonal natural oranges made by mother nature to a taste that apeals to consumers who appreciate a particular taste and consistant flavor profile.

If you prefer concentrated juice then the so called sins are even worse because the pastuerization is done at higher temperatures for longer periods and then the water is evaported off to create the concentrate. This process requires a more intense flavor pack be restored to the juice yet it still comes from the original flavor essences present in the juice. The benefit is that this juice can be stored as a frozen product rather than chilled and requires less shipping costs per unit of serving making it less expensive.

To classify this whole thing as some sort of Frankenstein juice is just another example of a BS eco nazi propaganda attack. OJ is one of the most natural and healthy products within the whole beverage category and short of having a tree in your yard offers the consumer a product as close to fresh as governement regulations will allow.

I am proud to be a grower and producer of this product and have nothing to hide nor nothing to be ashamed of in bringing this product to market.

That's exactly what I do with my fruit and vegetables in my juicer. I'm serious. I make my own juice fresh, gallons of it per week. I've posted about it.

How is it a straw man? That's just a description of how orange juice is made in the USA. Why are your panties in a bunch?

Quote:

Secondly, the orange juice you buy....

Uh, but this is definitely a straw man even if it was unintended. I don't buy my orange juice. If make it myself.

Quote:

And we all know that pasteurization removes 90% of the nutrients from juice. That's why I make my own. But that's up to you to decide what to buy.

Nice, but it is. It's a manufactured, processed product. It's not natural or pure by any means.

Buy what you want, I don't care. I'm just telling you how it's manufactured. The peanut gallery sure likes it.

Uh, the purpose of the thread is to name American Producers of American products that can raise awareness of who might be worthy of consumer support to restore some semblance of an equitable economy.

Believe whatever you want about the quality and nutritional value of branded OJ but don't expect me to sit here and let you trash it because you read it on the web and felt this was the appropriate thread to display your initimate knowledge of the subject.

Oh yeah, If you indeed make your own fresh juice then that makes you a processor as well and if you blend it with other juices you become a manufacturer. Welcome to the evil club.

Anyway, thanks for supporting my industry in whatever manner you choose to consume oranges. I really mean that too!
