Spring Northeast Snowstorm on the Way!
By Andy Mussoline, Meteorologist
Apr 21, 2012; 3:22 PM ET

Quote:
A wild spring snowstorm is heading toward the Northeast late Sunday night into Monday, only one week after highs soared into the 80s across the region. The storm will produce heavy rain, strong winds and a tree-snapping snowfall.

The raucous storm will move across the Florida Peninsula through tonight, sparking dangerous thunderstorms early. The storm will then move north along the East Coast on Sunday before pinwheeling west into the interior Northeast on Monday.

Initially, heavy rain will pound cities from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia and New York City Sunday afternoon and evening. By Sunday night, heavy rain and strong winds will pound New England, including Boston.

At the same time, heavy, wet snow will begin to fall across the Appalachians of West Virginia north into central Pennsylvania on Sunday night.

A wet snow will pile up into Monday across central and western Pennsylvania north into southwestern New York. The higher elevations will be targeted for the heaviest snow.

Towns from Johnstown, Pa., to Bradford, Pa., and Salamanca, N.Y., are on alert for the heaviest snow Sunday night into Monday

Cities such as Pittsburgh, Pa., to Erie, Pa., and Buffalo, N.Y., are on alert for a heavy, wet, snow, where several inches can accumulate....

This thing started out as a ball off the coast and now has picked up quite a bit of rotation!

A couple months from now and we'd have a mess down here instead of some rain...

Back in the 50's and 60's my family lived upstate NY and once in a while this would happen. Snow in April, sometimes even June!

I'm up north of Albany.

Our fruit trees have already flowered.

Will snow kill the blossoms?

weather.com says rain, 43 degrees. Not nearly cold enough for snow.

What was funny was the other day it was 90 degrees here, and the weather report had frost warnings for the next day.

Snow actually helps protect blossoms if it is a wet snow.

A hard frost will do serious damage to most fruit blooms.

It's not unusual for us to get frosts or freezes here but this month early spring has everything in full bloom. Lilacs, tulips, allium. We have an ornamental cherry and a couple of other ornamental shrubs that began and finished their bloom cycles before it cooled down enough to produce some frost. Despite March, I knew what April could bring so I left my frost blankets in our beds so I didn't have to keep dragging them out. Damn how it looks right now, it's a lot more convenient.

Boz, snow might not hurt them if it sticks as the snow can act as insulation from colder temps. Different levels of frost can cause no or varying degrees of damage. Frost can occur with temperatures above 32 degrees if the conditions are right but it won't generally cause much damage unless they're very sensitive plants or are in full bloom. Once you get below 28 for hours on end is when you get killing frosts or under around 25 degrees, freezes.

Grape farmers in SW Michigan got hit hard when we had that cold air come our way a short while back because everything was in full bloom. I think there were multiple growers with 95% crop loss, with the remaining 5% not worth taking the time to see through.

On the plus side, you might not have much of a flea/tick/mosquito season if the low temps cause enough of a die-off.

Au contraire ... we're already having a proliferation due to the above normal temps of the past 5 or so months...

smiley They taste a bit ... gamey...

I find the birds to be quite helpful while still breathing smiley. Mine leave if you try to get close to them. What they are, however, is incredibly noisy and good watchdogs - they set off with loud screams when predators, including the 2-legged variety, come calling.

Last week I heard the guineas screaming in what I call "imminent danger" tones and ran outside, only to see the southern end of a northbound fox making off with one of my chickens. The squawking saved my other chickens from a similar fate.

Yeah, lots of folks around here have hens of one sort or another.

I think the Rhode Island Reds are especially cute.

Not quite ready to get that country yet, y'all could play croquet on this lawn :)

I might go there, but I'd rather configure the upgrade to solar as a mental project, first. And, that's not this year.
