Philip A. Kramer, 52, Calabasas, California, an attorney at the center of a national loan modification scam, agreed in April 2012 to be disbarred.
Kramer (bar number 113969) admitted to numerous counts of misconduct including collection of illegal fees, failure to return advance fees and accepting employment in states where he was not licensed to practice law. Kramer also agreed to pay $122,000 in restitution to 27 former clients as part of a stipulation accepted April 13 by the State Bar Court.

What's this "agreed . . . to be disbarred"? Now we have criminals being asked to agree to their punishment?

How about nailing him on criminal charges and making him spend a large chunk of the rest of his life in jail, plus civil charges to impoverish him in order to pay penalties in addition to just the restitution?

A guy in my high school class worked for Charles Keating of S&L fame back in the day. Lived the good life for a while until it all fell apart.

He avoided going to jail on a technicality by the hair of his chinny-chin-chin, but part of the alternative was disbarment for life.

At a high school reunion a few years ago, he was a quieter, meeker man, though there was some talk about him out of earshot.
