Tomorrow we crash?

Quote:
Athens, Greece (CNN) -- Greece's ruling coalition appeared headed for steep losses in Sunday's parliamentary elections while parties on the far left and far right were poised to make significant gains amid anger over austerity measures, exit polls indicated.

Right-leaning New Democracy, a member of the coalition, first in the polling with 19% to 20.5% of the vote -- barely half its result from elections two years ago, according to early exit polling released by state broadcaster ERT shortly after polls closed Sunday.

New Democracy's coalition partner, left-leaning PASOK, was on track for a stunning reversal of fortune, going from 44% of the vote two years ago to between 13% and 14% on Sunday, according to the data, which is based on interviews with 10,000 voters....

This must be the moment the CBs have been saving dry powder for. Will this be Iceland, Bear Sterns, or Lehman?

It seems to me that the Greek gov't can backpedal on "austerity" ONLY if they also default on debt, as they do not have the economic wherewithal to pay their debts plus interest AND support the promised welfare state.

Is this not correct?

Yet, if they default, they can't borrow anymore at reasonable interest rates to support the welfare state, which, by their definition, is "austerity" anyway. Thus, no matter how the Greeks voted, they voted for austerity, yet the press seems to touting the vote results as a vote against austerity, rather than a vote against the parties that sold them down the river. What am I missing here?

I suspect if the socialist voters of any of the western democracies understood their true situation, they would be building guillotines rather than voting.

Peterm99 sums it up nicely, but for Greece to pull the plug on this farce now and precipitate a crisis is still the best option for them.

Keep 100% of your income in austerity+default, or keep less than 100% of your income by paying off debts+austerity?

Well, I think you have your answer.

Because there's no way they'd actually report on a country acting as sovereign state, the facade of a united europe must remain!
