Fluoride is not required for any cellular process in your body. That's to say one can live life without ever encountering it perfectly fine.

The fact it can get into bone and make it brittle... that's beside the point.

China has fluoride in the water and their IQ has not dropped.
Other nations the same.

Flouride ions are tiny, so tough to filter. Have to use chemical methods to absorb the ions, usually aluminum or calcium filters. They don't eliminate the flouride, only can decrease concentration. Easiest just to buy spring water. Don't get drinking water, that's just bottled tap that's maybe slightly purified.

Grace, you'd have to take the water, before and after, to a sampling laboratory and have it tested for a whole host of chemical constituents. I could do that here in Austin but it would be around $1500-$2000 to have all the tests run.

The Berkey's are very highly recommended everywhere but I'm not aware of any independent verification of their own tests that they publish.

Studies I've read show that fluoride exposure early in life can affect higher order brain function and behavioral issues. Lower intelligence and a more docile population seem like a win-win for .gov.

You need a reverse osmosis filter to remove it. You can buy a basic one for under $200 at sams or costco, but they take a bit of DIY top get rigged up and are quite huge.

I probably drink the very the cleanest water in Austin. I bet only one out of every 20,000 households might do what I do.

I first run my tap water through a commercial distiller. The distiller is made in the USA and the company (Durastill) sells them to our embassies overseas and to corporations with overseas offices. Then I filter it with a Berkey, both the black and white (heavy metal/fluoride) elements.

It's virtually pure. I can leave a bottle of water sealed up for a couple of weeks and it won't develop any detectable bacterial or mold growth at all. Most tap water that you leave in a bottle for a few days will develop a smell from either mold or bacterial growth.

Do I need to do that? Not in order to just survive. But I choose not to have all those impurities, which they aren't entirely truthful about, in my water which I drink about 1.5 gallons per day.

I'd rather have good reliable morphine added to our water supply.

Science has a pretty good handle on the long term effects and with the right dose who gives a **** about toothaches?

But seriously, **** like viagra and ssri and lithium being dumped into water consumed by normal peeps/little kids is all kinds of wrong.

Jota if you're drinking distilled all the time, you need to make sure you're consuming enough minerals. Distilled will leach calcium and other minerals out of your body.

Municipal water supplies should not be used as a medicine distribution channel. Chlorine is different, as it's sole purpose is to kill harmful organisms for a safe drinking water. If you wish, you can always remove the chlorine with a carbon filter at your tap.

Ben,
There is a difference between naturally occuring fluoride - which is generally in the much more stable salt-form of calcium fluoride (CaF2) - and added fluoride.

The areas in China and India in which the fluoride occurs in sodium fluoride (NaF) form - naturally and due to the pollution - have problems with lower IQ's and such. I recommend reading some studies on this subject from the Chinese themselves. At least the ones I've read suggest that fluoride that is not in the CaF2-form is detrimental to health. I'll try and dig them up if you can't find them yourself.
Regards,

Yep, I actually buy a 10 pound box of oranges and a 10 pound bag of grapefruit every time I go to Costco, which is about every 10 days. I probably eat 4 oranges and a grapefruit per day. Then there's all the asparagus, carrots, green beans, etc. that I eat. I actually eat pretty damn well. I'm not sure what more I could do other than eat a few mouthfuls of dirt every day.

I spent several months thinking about this whole process, so I checked out everything associated with distilled water. For a while I was actually using a condenser and pulling water out of the atmosphere. It wound up being too dirty though (dust, etc.) and too much of a pain to filter. Another option is a solar still, but not entirely practical in my yard. I planned out rainwater cisterns, but the total cost was more than I wanted to spend. I've looked at virtually every option possible and distiller+filter looked like the best option.

Middletown Say No To Fluoride

my letter to the editor

The Common Council of Middletown voted for Fluoridation in 2003. Middletown recently announced that the fluoridation of its water will now commence. Middletown should reconsider their social engineering ways when it comes to the health and wellbeing of its city residents. The claim that by fluoridating its water supply, will help reduce the incident of childhood cavities by strengthening the enamel. Let’s keep in mind that children lose their first set of teeth at around six years old as the adult teeth start to emerge. I would venture to guess that if you sampled 1000 adult city residents about what “fluoride” is, less then 5% would even be close. “Flouride” is in fact Fluorosilicic acid, which is a classified hazardous waste, is the substance used in 90% of the water fluoridation programs in the United States.

This has raised concern amongst health risk assessment scientists at the EPA who have helped draw attention to the fact that the only other place this Fluorosilicic acid can legally be disposed of is in a hazardous waste facility. As Dr. William Hirzy, Senior Vice President of the EPA's Professionals Headquarters Union, put it, "if this stuff gets out into the air, it’s a pollutant; if it gets into the river, it’s a pollutant; if it gets into the lake, it’s a pollutant; but if it goes right straight into your drinking water system, it’s not a pollutant. That’s amazing!"

As of April 7th, 1997, the United States FDA (Food & Drug Administration) has required that all fluoride toothpastes sold in the U.S. carry a poison warning on the label. The warning cautions toothpaste users to:
"WARNING: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional help or contact a poison control center immediately."

It was previously believed that fluoride was most effective when ingested, and that the addition of fluoride to local groundwater systems would be the optimal way to help prevent tooth decay. However, since that initial introduction of fluoride to drinking water in the 1950s, scientists have learned that applying fluoride directly to the teeth, as with toothpaste and rinses, is the most effective way to prevent tooth decay.

That being said, wouldn’t it be more prudent of Middltown to work with the schools and parents on an education program about tooth decay, its causes (bacteria) and its prevention, rather than adding a known poison to the water supply affecting all age groups including seniors where fluoride is known to contribute to Skeletal Fluorosis making the bones more brittle. Reject the fluoridation of your water supply despite the infrastructure being bought and paid for. Make wise choices.

maybe plants filter that crap out, I don't know. I know cat tails are supposed to be good at removing toxins from the water they use.

Why don't you just use a reverse osmosis filter? From what I understand it practically filters evertything out excetp for the H and the O

I got mine on ebay for $35

I looked into RO quite a bit and couldn't find any good evidence that it would remove synthetic hormones and pharmaceuticals. Exact data from independent tests are pretty hard to come by for this sort of thing. Companies don't really want to do the tests because it would show the flaws in their product and governments especially don't want to show you what's in the water that you pay them tax/utility money to provide. Anyway, depending on exactly what is volatilized with the steam or makes it through the gravity filter, almost all of the organics (hormones, pharmaceuticals) would be filtered out after distillation and a carbon/alumina filter.

Also, distillation (boiling/cooling) and gravity filters are a mechanically simpler process than RO. RO has more likely points of failure in the system. It also requires more maintenance and is a bit more involved to set up. It's just a slightly more temperamental system. I don't think it's a bad system at all, it just didn't quite fit my requirements.
