Well, the country abolished its "2nd in line" post. So who knows who will be the next crown prince. Most bets would go to his brother prince Salman (the current defense minister), but many rumors are swirling that he is quite ill himself. So who knows?

Won't really matter... the Saudi family is there to stay.

well, the thing is that succession goes from brother to brother, and most of them are old. The youngest is in his late 60s, just to give you an idea. While it has been assumed that Prince Salman would take over, his frail health has created doubt, meaning there is no clear candidate.

However, the real problem is how the line of succession will move to the next generation. Who of the children of these brothers will become the future king? There are so many of them, in the hundreds. And how will the post of king be moved around? There's no clear answer for that. The Allegiance Council created by the current king is supposed to solve this issue, but it could be easily disbanded by the next king. In other words, Saudi Arabia's future over the next 10-20 years is far from certain, and Nayef's death has increased the uncertainty.

The kingdom has not been around for 1000s of years. The historical view, it is pretty new.
And they do not always follow the rules of succession.

I think SA future over the next 1-2 years is more interesting.
