Ok, this recently came out.

Lets say it's wednesday.

You says "lets meet next friday."

Which day do you mean? The very next friday (ie: Two days from now) Or do you mean the friday after that?

This is why I don't say that.

Ditto "turn the air conditioner up."

My favorite Gallagher line is when he asks his wife if he can turn and she says "No One's Coming."

Two days from now Friday is this week so it would be "this Friday", a week and two days Friday is in the next week so it is "next Friday".

Same as "next Monday" would be after the weekend, whereas "this Monday" would have been two days ago.

There is "this Friday" and there is "next Friday". They are different.

Edit: and they are all in the future, i.e. >= tomorrow.

Nine days from your theoretical Wednesday.

I've always thought "next friday" meant the very next friday to roll around on the calendar. "friday after next" was a week and two days from now.

Next Friday is not LITERALLY the next Friday.

It's the Friday after the next Friday.

I voted for the first option, but

I will clarify

Next Friday is always in context of the entire conversation.

If someone has already said and used 'this friday', 'next friday' is the friday following 'this friday'.

i always ask for the day of week and the day of month to be clear when scheduling and discussing things.

I usually say "this coming Friday" for the first Friday that follows today, and "Friday the Nth" for any Friday after that. English is simply too confusing about it otherwise.

I recently flew to surprise a friend for his birthday... on the wrong weekend.

My problem was slightly different. I asked about any party plans for his birthday, which was 10 days in the future. The answer was yes "on Saturday", which I presumed to be his birthday, which fell on the Saturday 10 days in the future.

But, that really meant the immediate Saturday, 3 days in the future. Sadly I was not at the party, and there was no party the following weekend.

Used to have this argument with the wife until I finally said, "This is Florida, I always want it COOLER in the house. What man wants the temperature warmer when referring to the a/c?"

And of course she always means warmer when asking.

"turn the air conditioner up"

You turn the thermostat down, you turn the AC up.

I voted for the following week (9 days)

But, let's change it up a bit. What if it were Tuesday and you say, "let's meet up next Monday".

In this case, I would assume that it was the upcoming Monday.

Maybe our brains cut off the week on Sunday?

Heh, I was casually working out the scenarios the other day.

"This" is in context to the week. So, "next" refers to "next week." At least, IMO. Today is Tuesday, "this Monday" should really have been said "this last Monday" (or better, "yesterday", but smiley). "Next Monday" is next week, up through Saturday. On Sunday, at least here in the U.S., it becomes "this Monday."

If it is Sat, Sun, Mon, Tuesday or Wednesday, a meeting at the end of the week is on Friday. "This" is implied when you say Friday on one of those days. If on Thursday, you say, let's meet on Friday, the "Next" is implied because you would say tomorrow if you meant tomorrow.

Party'n, Party'n, Yeah!
