All those people who went on disability last month didn't just march down to SS and sign up yesterday. The process for winning a disability check takes months -- in some cases, years. My attorney has a side specialty in SS disability cases, and she has had clients with true disabilities, including paralysis, who have waited up to 18 months before they get a check. Yes, it's retroactive to when they first applied, but still the process takes time.
So the folks who got disability last month must have applied last year, likely among the early group of unemployed who rolled off the 99-week unemployment payments. (Remember how we all wondered what those people were doing? Now we know.) That implies we'll see a lot more going on disability over the coming months.

Quote:What about the class of folks who valiantly send thousands of resumes to employers, being perfectly qualified for the jobs on offer, not even to receive replies from said employers? So they end up having to go onto some form of welfare or disability. ah.. the classic.. i refuse to work at Target, fast food or car wash argument. there are jobs.. it's just all these *******s refuse to take them and would rather commit fraud and leech off the government until they finally start drawing SS and medicare. this type of attitude is what has been created by our **** government and lack of any real leader of any sort. everyone is entitled to own a house.. here.. let us pay your mortgage for 2 years cause you can't. BS... people in the past saved for many many years to buy a home. now you got the government paying peoples mortgage who put no money down and have no job and no income to eventually support or maintain the house. everyones getting bailed out, everyones getting a free check, everyones on disability or unemployment.. it's all crap.. and it's all going to blow up.

I can tell that some here just haven't taken the time to read Tom Baugh's book "Starving the Monkeys." Strange title, yes, but it explains why it's actually IMMORAL to support this system with your productive efforts. They DEPEND on the productive to prey upon. Sure, we all have to get along, and we do what we have to to feed ourselves and our families. But start new enterprises that employ others and increase the common wealth among other productive people? That's largely a huge mistake that plays INTO their hands, as Baugh explains. You all should really read that book, if you've not. It will open your eyes. Ayn Rand developed a similar thought nexus around the character "Francisco D'Anconia" in Atlas Shrugged. If you haven't read that book, you're about 40 years behind...

I have a buddy, licensed xray tech. he was let go because he let his cert expire while he was getting ready to go to Iraq (if he'd been IN Iraq at the time he could have gotten an extension - but basically the person back home managing his affairs ****ed up on him). He fixed that problem, and STILL can't get work as an xray tech (after almost 4 years). ****ing WENDY'S turned him down (overqualified). It broke up a pretty good relationship he was in, too. He's been working on and off though. You are right - jobs ARE out there - but don't underestimate the hurdles people have to jump to get them.

http://www.businessinsider.com/even-scie....Even Scientists Can't Find Jobs In America Today We've written about how college students should major in science, tech, engineering or math (STEM). This conventional wisdom is based on government propaganda (Obama: "This is what will make a difference in this country over the long haul.") and studies showing that science majors from the past forty years have scored better jobs. Unfortunately today's science job market doesn't live up to the hype (via @curriculumveto). Jim Austin of ScienceCareers tells WashPo's Brian Vastag: “There have been many predictions of [science] labor shortages and . . . robust job growth. And yet, it seems awfully hard for people to find a job. Anyone who goes into science expecting employers to clamor for their services will be deeply disappointed.” Pharmaceutical engineer Kim Haas agrees: “It’s been a bloodbath, it’s been awful... Scads and scads and scads of people” have been cut, Haas said. “Very good chemists with PhDs from Stanford can’t find jobs.” The dearth of science jobs follows "a decade of slash-and-burn mergers; stagnating profit; exporting of jobs to India, China and Europe; and declining investment in research and development," according to Vastag. Of course, other majors aren't doing better. Check out earnings and income by major > http://www.businessinsider.com/majors-pa....

"it's all crap.. and it's all going to blow up."
And is PRECISELY what the intent of this is.
It's going to be an ENGINEERED blowup and they are going to consumate the theft of our country while most of us have absolutely NO CLUE what's going on.
And most still won't when we're being rudely pushed into a hole.

How does a fast food joint know you are overqualified? My wife has a Masters from McGill in molecular biology. She worked at Burger King for 6 months. On her application she put down she was a high school graduate and had some experience in the cafeteria. She was hired. When the manager realized my wife could count, she was put in charge of inventory and within 4 months was a manager. At the 6 month mark she accepted a job in her field of study and left Burger King. DO NOT state you are a rocket scientist when applying for a job that doesn't require it. They will know you are overqualified.

Pitz--the Unemployment rate for those with college degrees is < 5%. For those with advanced degrees...it's around 3.5%. There is no excuse for those groups of people (aka rocket scientists--and yes there are plenty of businesses that need smart people) to not get jobs. A thousand applications is actually quite ridiculous. Put a lot of effort into about 5-10 applications a week, make follow up phone calls, network, volunteer, talk with recruiters and headhunters, etc. That is how you will get a job. Most people are freaking lazy. I work for a retailer and see it all of the time (and we do a much better job of hiring than most retailers).

Pitz is talking bull****.
After sending 100 applications not hearing means he needs to either update resume or learn new skills. Instead he has all the time in the world to bitch and moan about h1bs.
According to pitzhole even financial crisis is caused by H1b visa. May be ****tard can develop technical indicators too based on h1b visa numbers.

pitz wrote..Are people who want to work, send out thousands of resumes, and invest massively in their skills, at fault for their unemployment? Maybe yes, maybe no. But regardless of the answer, this line of reasoning always seems to leave out the unspoken, underlying bull**** premise, which is: "Because I'm an entitled American, that means I'm a ward of the state. Ergo, if I can't find a job, the state is obligated to take care of me, preferably in a manner that doesn't wound my fragile, unearned self-esteem." The entitlement disease has sunken into the bone marrow of this country, and we all know how the story ends when the disease has advanced that deeply.

Didn't anyone read what I posted ?
That said, I agree with Tyrath - craft your resume/application with elements of your history, just not all of it. They don't have to know a PhD is applying for a burger flipper job, as long as the applicant intend to do a good job at what's offered.
I've always said I can get a job/client anywhere; all you need is the willingness to work, to learn, relevant skills, and to have a good personality. So far that hasn't failed me; I'm as busy today as I ever was, including acquiring new clients.
