The state should bring charges against him for leaving a loaded gun with a three year old.
There is a case right now for just that here in Michigan. Sadly, the child killed HIMSELF and the parent is living in his own personal hell already. However, that doesn't mean he shouldn't be prosecuted. He stupidly left a loaded pistol where any child could easily get it (not just his own). I'll try to find the articles following the story.

Took the words right out of my head, Cape.

Good idea Delphis. He should have one surgically installed so he can't claim it was inconvenient.

Grip safety or not he would have been shot.

As soon as you pick up a gun with a grip safety it's turned off. They work when the gun is dropped, holstered incorrectly etc. This gun was in a human hand.

I'm not a glock fanboi, but they do not have a light trigger even with a 3# connector. There's no way a department issue gun would have the pull lightened.

Not a bad idea, Delphis. But you can't fix stupid.

the off-duty officer forgot that he had left the loaded .45-caliber pistol under the front seat of this Ford Ranger.

Gotta wonder which piggy is the dumber of the two - the one that leaves a loaded handgun in the truck for his toddler to find or the one that forgets the two dogs he works with everyday and leaves them in the car to roast.

I should have had the disclaimer:

I am long one S&W quick draw gun safe and yes, one XD-9...

I do really like to quickdraw as it has a cable loop that locks back into the unit so you can lash it to your vehicle seat and not worry as much about leaving it for short periods in the vehicle.

Saw this one as well...pretty cool!

Why would I leave a handgun in a vehicle?

It's similar to leaving my motorcycle helmet at home. Doesn't do me a damn bit of good.

Why would I leave a 3 year old in a vehicle?

I can't even draw a parallel for that one.

@Flaps...I get your point. There are times (albeit exceptions) that it is necessary...

The 3 YO is a much better argument, we had a Mom leave her TWO toddlers in the car (which was running, btw) and some crack head stole the car and headed on a wild police chase up I-5...

Every parents nightmare, unless you NEVER leave your kid (or your K-9) in your vehicle...

Great night last night Flaps wind 180 at 8 kts...gust to mid 20's...

Are you and the lady gonna make it up to sail soon?

I find no exceptions. I will not die huddled under a table because of a cardboard sign.

She's casting off today for a chick's weekend. That does leave my schedule open though. PM me if you're going to sail.

There's no way a 3 YO holds the grip safety and pull the trigger of an XD at the same time. My 4 YO wouldn't be able to pull it off either with the size of her hands. Not that the guy wasn't stupid but if it were an XD it would have been a lot less likely that he would have been shot.

Okay so an XD is the most fantastic pistol on earth. Is "a lot less likely" good enough to put it in a car with a three year old?

Any kid that size will hold a gun with both hands. Since this kid proved to be able to fire the gun I don't think I'd rule out a kid being able to press the grip safety.
