The New York Police Department will officially unveil its sophisticated surveillance system to track criminals and potential terrorists as soon as next week, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Saturday.

Kelly said the city developed the software with Microsoft, The Associated Press reported.

Kelly said the "domestic awareness system" combines citywide video surveillance with law enforcement databases.

He said the tracking system will be officially unveiled by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg as soon as next week. Kelly spoke Saturday before an audience at the Aspen Security Forum...

This has to be facial recognition in real-time pulling mug shots.

So if you are arrested for anything, you are tracked.

Next up they link this with the Driver's License database.

Police/sheriff cars here (in middle of nowhere) have cameras on the outside of their cars which take pictures of oncoming traffic vehicles' license plates, send the number to their computer, look up the number in the database to see to whom the car is registered, whether it's been stolen, if the car belongs to someone for whom there is an arrest warrant outstanding, etc. So as they're traveling around, they're monitoring all of the cars around them.

Interestingly, after 2+ years with vista64, I don't think I've gotten a BSOD yet.

It does still have issues with long uptimes (or some apps do, anyway, opera - specifically email - will **** up on you after a few months) causing slowdowns in the OS, but at least it does show that stability isn't unknown. That's part of why I liked win2k so much.

Microsoft likes to sell Server and SQL installs, so anything that needs lots of server and databases would be in their target zone. They also want to expand Kinect tech....

Microsoft helped the New York Police Department build a surveillance and intelligence sharing network to fight terrorism and help investigators solve crimes. Now the NYPD will get a hefty cut of the revenue as the partners prepare to jointly market the intelligence system to other police departments around the world.

Microsoft finished work on the NYPD’s Domain Awareness System in October. The software allows investigators to simultaneously view video gathered from the city’s thousands of cameras and information culled from 911 calls and public records.

Microsoft will now share 30% of the revenue with the city as the company sells the technology to police forces around the country and in allied countries, according to Mike McDuffie, vice-president for Americas services, sales and business development at Microsoft, and a former general in the U.S. Army.

“We hope to make back everything we spent,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a press conference Wednesday at the Lower Manhattan Security Coordination Center, in front of a wall of blinking surveillance feeds. That amount would be as much as $40 million, including the cost of labor by city employees, Bloomberg said...

And you know the system will not work when NYPD crimes are reported by citizen.

And the system still can't track crooked cops, fascist politicians and crooked banksters... funny uh?

So what's the big deal? They're going to be tracking every NYPD officer, and every federal employee in the country?

In California you can use new car dealer paper plates forever and leave that little temp in your window and when you get stopped its merely a fix it ticket... The delta vs red light cameras, toll roads and other means of identifying your vehicle etc make the $25 fix it ticket fee a very good deal

Oh and make sure it's late model and keep it clean :)
