Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has called on people to avoid physical contact, after the deadly Ebola virus spread to the capital, Kampala.

Fourteen people have died, including one in Kampala, since the outbreak began in western Uganda three weeks ago, he said in a special broadcast.

Great. It's atypical too. Initial victims haven't been bleeding out.

You die the same way. Internal organs die when their cells are all turned into virus factories.

Good points Ulster. Especially the incubation period. I read some books on Ebola years ago because it fascinated me. The reason it never really gets going is because it kills the host too quickly. So far.

"I wish you good luck." Those were the words of Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni after announcing on 28 July that there were cases of Ebola haemorrhagic fever in the capital, Kampala. He asked that people avoid physical contact and report suspected cases.

The outbreak is the Sudan strain of Ebola, which kills around 60 per cent of those infected – unlike the Zaire strain, which kills 90 per cent. There have been 20 known cases so far, and 14 deaths, starting in early July with a pregnant woman in the Kibaale district, then eight relatives who attended her funeral. It also killed her nurse, and the nurse's baby. The virus appears to be spreading only with close contact, making it unlikely to rampage through Kampala.

The Sudan strain killed 224 people in north-west Uganda in 2000 and one person last year. The virus persists in wild fruit bats and occasionally jumps to people.

Death toll to 25?

http://www.dailynews.co.tz/index.php/loc....

Won't let me copy any part of the article, so I'll write a synopsis-

Tanzania is now on high alert for Ebola after the virus claims 25 victims in neighboring Uganda. So far, no cases have been reported within Tanzania's borders, but the minister of health, Ms. Regina Kikuli, has put 5 regions bordering Uganda on alert.

Plenty more at the link...

Been also reading around the net, the virus has spread further than it has in the past. Some infection reports are coming from Hoima, which is ~100 km north of the original infection cluster, which was at Mbarara, ~150 km WNW of Kampala, the capital.

Something to remember here-roads are still pretty rough in that area, and most people don't have cars-lots of travel (if it's done) is either by bus, or on legs. This might be a non-related cluster to the original outbreak, then again it might be-I'd be far more afraid if the clusters are related, which could mean the virus is spreading more efficiently...

Karl, could we pin this here? At least until there's a resolution...

There hasn't yet been a breakout in a major city.

Till now.

We really don't know what kinda progression it's going to have.

Thanks. It deserves it.

The whole olympic thing... scares me.

One terrorist able to make contact with one of these people... Then flying to the olympics the last day or day before + last day.

That's all it would take.

We would be ****ed.

* Two more die overnight of disease
* Officials hope cases are tailing off
* Kenyan man in isolation over suspected infection

KAMPALA, Aug 1 (Reuters) - The death toll from an Ebola outbreak in western Uganda has risen to 16 after two more people died of the disease, health officials said on Wednesday, but they are hopeful that the worst has passed.

Eighteen people are in an isolation ward at a hospital in Kibaale district, where the outbreak started, and teams of health workers are visiting villages to isolate people possibly infected and to advise others on preventive measures...

Quote:
Up to 176 people who are suspected to have had contact with Ebola victims are being monitored, but none have so far shown signs of the disease, Ministry of Health spokeswoman Rukia Nakamatte told Reuters.

Neighbouring Kenya said it was monitoring a suspected case of Ebola after a man was placed in isolation in Siaya district hospital, near the Ugandan border.

The country's director of public health and sanitation said it was unlikely to be a case of Ebola. However, the Kenyan speaker of parliament has asked the public health minister to deliver a statement on the matter...

Wonderful. That's just ****ing wonderful.

At least one of the strains has the possibility of being airborn too (though it's a VERY limited amount of time it can survive.)

Apparently one nurse caught it that way years ago.

In a prison, it could be a nightmare.
