Sharp Corp. (6753), maker of Aquos televisions, said it will cut 5,000 jobs after widening its annual loss forecast to 250 billion yen ($3.2 billion) as demand for its sets slumped.

The workforce reduction, the company’s first since 1950, is part of a plan to reduce fixed costs by 100 billion yen, the Osaka-based company said in a statement today. The loss outlook compares with the average 65.3 billion-yen loss estimate of 16 analysts compiled by Bloomberg, and is more than eight times the company’s previous projection of a 30 billion-yen loss.

The Japanese electronics maker joins rivals Sony Corp. (6758) and Panasonic Corp. (6752) in planning job cuts following record losses caused by lower TV prices and demand, and a yen trading near its postwar high, reducing the value of overseas earnings. The steps come after Sharp unveiled a plan to separate its TV panel unit and turned to Foxconn Technology Group (2354) and founder Terry Gou for 133 billion yen in funding after forecasting its second straight annual loss.

Just had a new Panny plasma delivered yesterday. Last one only lasted two and a half years. Tried to fix it, but it was the PDP. Had a nice 3 inch black vertical line.

Anyway, while I was trying to decide plasma vs. LCD, I noticed how many TVs brands are out there and how cheap (cost and material) they Have become. I was also the only one looking at TVs at Costco and Best Buy. Bought it from Amazon, less cost, no tax, no shipping. I'm not surprised that the profit is down. The guy who dropped off the TV said most replacements seem to be for Sony. He said Pannys hardly ever break. Keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

Purchased the Sharp 70" Quattron model about a year ago. Amazing picture. Price hasn't dropped on it since I bought.

as much as i hate to say it.. as i personally think there is much that can be improved on the state of the art tv's PQ wise and would love to see some high volume to keep the per unit cost dow so i can get them cheaper heh.

just how are they going to sell even the next generation (whatever that is) to the masses. going from a SD crt to a HD flat panel is a huge jump. is going from an lcd to say an oled screen going to sell well when most dont even notice the flaws in current display tech ?

they tried 3d, and really anyone could see that was gonna be a big flop. maybe oled with goggle-less 3d ? donno what the spark will be, perhaps there will be none.

Westinghouse sells cheap decent LED LCDs with no frills. Flatscreens are low margain products like digital cameras.

On 3D, I think Nolan got it right by not filming the latest Batman in 3D. Hopefully this will mark the end of the fad.
