Quote:
GALVESTON — Low oxygen levels are believed to have killed possibly hundreds of thousands of Gulf menhaden fish found littering beaches and shorelines from Matagorda to Galveston, officials said Sunday.

“It was pretty gross,” Thomas Powell of Houston said. “It was worse before we cleared them out.”

Steven Mitchell, a biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said low levels of dissolved oxygen in the offshore waters could have caused the fish kill, which progressed east from the Colorado River toward Galveston.

“I would say it’s pretty moderate to high level,” Mitchell said. “It’s extended over a large geographical area. It’s not what I would consider a small fish kill now, and it’s still ongoing.”

Mitchell fielded no reports of pollution or red tide, an algae bloom that also could deplete oxygen in water.

So, what else depletes the oxygen in the water? And if it is low oxygen wouldn't other fish be effected as well?

I finally took the red pill. I have a lot of catching up to do. Please excuse my ignorance.

Our area of the Gulf has a lot of stuff going on all the time. Lots of rivers empty tons of silt and whatever else was carried by the river into the Gulf. It could be anything and it's nothing to be alarmed about just yet.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s the Gulf was a lot dirtier than it is now. That was from all the unregulated refining in the area. You would go to the beaches around Galveston and there would be tar all along the beach that would stick to your feet. You'd have to use gasoline and a rag to clean it off.

I guess this natural kill is 1000 times worse than the BP spill.

Hey If. I imagine the oxygen levels affect species differently. For example i know a catfish can live in water that would kill a rainbow trout in maybe 20 seconds.

I didn't want to paste the whole article, but it said these are shad which are more susceptible to low O2 fish killings.

high water temps also reduced the solubility of Oxygen in the water

Could this be a relic of Hurricane Ernesto that has been picked up by the loop current?

Asking because you guys would know a lot more than I do about such things.

Maybe I'm superstitious but one reason I was glad to move from Houston was because I was concerned about the unknown hazards of the chemicals from the BP spill and cleanup that could circulate back into the NW Gulf of Mexico a year or more later. (Probably not the issue in this case.)
