Because detection is based on passive systems and a sub can be as quiet as background noise when needed

Meh...... ya can't hide the electromagnetic disturbances that a sub makes in the ocean. We've got satellites that can spot a 100 watt bulb in another galaxy. We can spot these if we're actually lookin'.

This leak is also an opportunity to make Barry Soetoro look weak as he tries to appease Russia with his 'reset', in addition to the aforementioned $$$ the MIC now stands to gain.

As an aside, I was standing in line for the payphone in Dutch harbor Alaska. The line was unusually long as a Los Angeles class sub was in for emergency repairs. The periscope was fully extended and bent back 90 degrees. I asked one of the seaman from the sub standing in line in front of me what happened. He said he couldn’t tell me but he said something like that happens when you surface under heavy ice, or are following a Russian ship too closely. A while later he added they weren’t operating under the ice.

I'm leaning toward that. Otherwise, why would we ever let that cat out of the bag? After all, we're getting down to that time when .Mil argues hard for Appropriated Funds.

Well BubbleHead ain't buying it: http://bubbleheads.blogspot.com/2012/08/....

Obviously, it's possible that a Russian SSN could travel to the Gulf of Mexico and cruise around for a month in international waters during peacetime, even though that has no real military value, as we have no real naval bases with things like major combatants in the Gulf, and what do you expect the U.S. to do to stop them from transiting international waters, fire at them and start a war? -- it's the "undetected" part that strains credibility to the point of humor.

None of this surprises me. Having lived in South Florida most of my life, I can say that this area is totally porous. Pre hurricane Andrew the Air Force maintained an active training facility similar to Nellis at Homestead AFB, radar stations all over our part of the Carribbean. Never stopped Cuban fighters from flying undetected in our airspace. Post hurricane Andrew all that got scrapped and I started going to Key West every 2 weeks. Was able to drive into the NAS, no gate guard no ID drove straight to the end of the runway and had many a picnic while watching Hornets and Tomcats doing touch and go's. No Security to be seen anywhere. So having a SSN in our backyard is absolutely no surprise.

There's another possibility. The P-8A (sub hunter to replace the P-3 Orion) is being tested in the area.

(that's about all I can say about it and stay employed)

The rooskies might be data collecting.

" Never stopped Cuban fighters from flying undetected in our airspace."

I call BS on that. Document it please or it didnt happen. Cubans didnt have many "fighters" and still dont. I've never heard of that happening and I am a former Navy fighter pilot, was based on the east coast, and frequented Key West many times on excercises.
