Quote:
Skyrocketing feed costs and weak milk prices are forcing growing numbers of California's dairy farmers to sell their herds or file for bankruptcy.

The situation has become so dire that at least one dairy cooperative is launching a crisis hot line for despondent dairymen and their families.

"Things are ugly and getting uglier," said Riley Walter, a Fresno bankruptcy attorney representing many financially distressed dairymen.

In the past eight months, 28 San Joaquin Valley dairies have filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court's Fresno office, up from 24 in 2011 and 10 in 2010.

Whoa...that's bad. Down here, I have heard nothing bad. Most dairies have fields for hay and corn.

Take a walk on google through the Ramona Expressway between Perris and Hemet

(In real life it's a stinky ride! They use recycled water)

If feed is high why is the dairy market weak? Where is the cheap milk coming from? Or has demand dropped? This doesn't make sense to me.

It's corn prices. The corn in the valley is great, but the rest of the country is hurting. That is driving prices up a lot. Great for the few prescient farmers that planted corn in California. Not great for dairy farmers.

Dairy farmers have to sell to the middleman. Pasteurization is the stranglehold that nearly eliminates any chance of a free market in milk in this country. If you want to see a free and fair market that makes sense in dairy, buy raw milk and support nearby producers directly. I drink raw milk every day. Not dead yet. Not sick yet. The milk I drink comes from a small farm, not a factory. Much cleaner and the cows are pastured.
