We have hiked our billing consulting rates over 50% in the last two years and are getting ready to hike them another 20% and we still have more work than we can do. The large law firms and consulting firms are hiking their rates even faster even though this might turn down soon due to lack of work. I have over 20 years of experience and a new staff person bills more per hour than I do and I saw a statement from a law firm where they were billing an assistant (I am talking about secretarial work) at $175 an hour. Of course I am about 20 times faster at some things (no joke) than a person righ out of college. Anyway, the point is we are hiking our rates fast and we add a gas surcharge of $15 a day when we have to drive more than 15 miles to get to a client.

We need a strategy.

Well I'm constantly sending my congress critters letters and I also send newspapers and TV shows links about various tickers as well as telling everybody I know what's really going on and sending folks to the ticker, so I don't know how much more I can really do. The one I really thought would get people fired up was the raiding of the pension funds (CALPERS and the like) but so far absolutely no traction on that story!?! If that doesn't get folks fired up, nothing will...

Just wait until folks realize that their pensions aren't there and old mother hubbard's cupboard is bare. By then it will be too late, of course.

Somehow I don't think that's going to work at a time when unemployment is rising.

As I recall in last year's review (the first one I've had at my current employer) my manager said something to the effect of: "You should open the envelope, I think you're really going to like what you see there". I open the envelope and I look at the bottom line number thinking that, you know, the bottom line number would be the right one to look at and I notice that it looks like about a 12% raise and I am pleasantly surprised. The boss says "Now don't expect this good of a raise every year - we got special consideration for our group". And I'm thinking, wow, that's very nice.

A week or so later the check shows up with the new payrate on it. I'm shocked to see that there isn't that much change so I think, hmmm.... maybe I was right on the edge of a higher tax bracket and I got pushed over into the new higher one. Then I go back and look at that piece of paper my manager gave me in the review and notice another number that looks a whole lot closer to a 3% raise. And that, as it turns out, was the actual raise. That other number was the maximum possible raise you could ever possibly get.

So 3% is considered a really nice raise here which they needed "special consideration" to get us. Given that context, I suspect going in and asking for a 15% raise wouldn't get very far.

I caught Rush the Dittohead on the radio this afternoon and he was poo-pooing the Mortgage crises. He was part right in that he said it was due to the government zeal to get everyone in a house but he said that fraud was not a part of it when he agreed with a caller that every mortgage signing had a lawyer present and that if those lawyers broke laws they would be subject to disbar.

So I fired off a rant-mail to Rush and pointed out the fact that media hounds are not picking up the actions of a few good petitioners, instead they pander.

Links to appraiserspetition.com and a few select tickers asking him why were WE THE PEOPLE ignored - sort of backs up his original point though - .gov wanted everyone in a house regardless of cost - but he's still rather shallow on issue.
