Shutting down those news groups will CAUSE those pedophiles to start using other news groups that aren't labeled so obviously. Then Granny and little Johnnie can run across them by accident. Gramps might like those groups, but that's besides the point.

It's kind of like blocking an area code in the phone book because a lot of criminals make phone calls from there.

The problem with censorship like this is you just drive it underground. But what do you expect from the government except a knee jerk, attack the symptom approach? Why don't they just use the newsgroup to track down the pedophiles!? Those posts are mostly trackable by ip address and I can't imagine many countries in the world not cooperating with the U.S. to shut these people down or round them up.

I used to have to manage an nntp feed and believe me, there were times I just didn't want to know...

I ran an entire ISP, including an NNTP before it was NNTP and we moved News over modems using B.11 news. The solution to this problem is to drain the swamp; the pedos are posting this **** so other people can FIND IT.

You bury it in the feed and nobody knows where to look - and the content becomes useless.

I really have to back you on the comments about the bonds. I've been going through my own portfolios and that of relatives. I've seen a good number of 'funds' that are 'conservative' but chock full of various CDOs and other garbage. My mother-in-law's 'financial adviser' got his sorry assed canned last year because he had 60% of her assets (a 77 year old woman) in a High Yield bond fund. The dumb ass had the audacity to tell her that 'all bonds are safe and you might as well make the most interest.'

And there are millions of folks like her who are buying up these assets because they're 'safe' or being told they're safe. Even folks who aren't buying the 'high yield' but buying what was once considered to be actually safe are going to get screwed.

So, to other readers, don't trust the labeling on your 401(k)s. Demand detailed prospectuses. And, get a hold of what your parents have and really give it some scrutiny - I might just be anecdotal, but I will be willing to bet good money that their safe, conservative investments are chock full of ****.

My ISP doesn't give me newsgroups but for 40bux i got about 120 gigs worth with unlimited duration and access to everything. How exactly is that **** gonna stop child porn? Its not exactly hard to get a news subscription through the 100 other services. In fact through the isp you could have probably gotten court docs for everything someone uploaded or downloaded from the groups you try doing that with a news services located in eastern Europe.

Hotdrop, there aren't 100 other services. Virtually all news today is outsourced to a handful of big News providers.

This was starting when I ran my company, and it has gotten FAR more prevalent.

It LOOKS LIKE each provider has its own news servers, but it does not.

I remember when I setup my first news server and I was short staffed so I just let everything run. After a while I started to look around and I started to see what was out there and I started to filter groups out and the phone calls where funny as hell.

"I can't access er... um... rec.gardening anymore, can you fix it?"

That was the 94-95 time frame and I imagine it's still like that. I'm really surprised they haven't gone after more people. You can track IPs and go after posters and for the servers, all it should take is one notice to get people to pull the groups.

Boz has a point that people can just take over other groups but it's almost imposable to find. So even if they do, taking the named groups out will drastically reduce whats out there.

We didn't carry them and we ran our own server. The "customer" would start swearing and they would get transferred back to me, at which poitn I would explain that we recorded all calls and also had ANI on our trunks, and I'd be happy to forward the tape to the FBI.

I'll admit that they ran on my server longer then they should have, but at the time I was chief, cook and bottle washer. I would take them down in batches and I got calls asking for everything from rec.gardening to closer ones. The closest they got was just asking for the alt.binaries in general. Sometimes they'd ask for A.b.p.e.female when I knew they probably wanted A.b.p.e.child.female 'cause the former was still available... I think my block list was over 100 by the time we moved everyone to an offsite server managed by our hosting company.

I also blocked bestiality stuff too. But I did leave A.b.e.Ducktape.hamster... Just too funny since it was an inside joke. People used to call and meekly ask if I could fix their problem. Sometimes I would say "Sure, but you're going to need a piece of cheese, a roll of duct tape and a hamster, do you have those things?" Sometimes you'd get someone who was too busy writing notes to realize what you said at first... So I left it just in case anybody really took me serious... I'd have them post it... It was ****ing classic when it registered... I'll need what?!?!?!

Almost all of the child pornography is housed in Eastern European block countries that DO NOT cooperate with the United States law enforcement. It's housed there for a reason, because they know that the countries don't really give a ****. If you are hosting child pornographic material in the states you better bet your ass that you will be served a search warrant by the Feds.

And Gen is absolutely 100 percent right, the rooms in the IRC that the pedophiles go to are plainly labeled. The ****ers aren't that ingenious that they can invent plain names and secretly know they are in reality child porn rooms. They are also paranoid as hell with so many state, local, and federal cops trolling the web for them these days.

People are giving these sickos WAAY too much credit. They are not that organized.

When I was living in SC, my next-door neighbor was hauled away for distributing child-porn over the internet (I only found out about this when I saw it on COPS who knows how many months later; it was like "I KNOW THAT GUY...WAIT!!!" )

The realtor I used to help me find my current house was just convicted on internet-related child porn charges. He was a councilman for a local suburb.

A good friend of my brother's who taught at a local suburban high school (which my niece attended) was jailed for same.

Easy internet access has made the problem epidemic.

I used to get, on average, 2-3 calls per week from customers who had just signed up expecting to get to this material on our Usenet server, couldn't, and were*****ed off about it.

And those were just the people that were rude enough to end up transferred into my office. My customer service managers told me that this was a "one per rep, per day" - minimum - type of thing in terms of expectations.
