Ok fellas, yet another place to think about what is going on in our economy. My main concern in this is to design and get your opinions (please only post if you feel you have relatively sound knowledge or a relevant question)
1) What will be the milestones to look for before we, as citizens, begin to prepare? a)Are there specific milestones? b)If so, have any of them already passed?
2) What are the best, most safe, options for keeping ourselves--individual citizens--safe, both monetarily and physically in respect to the NECESSITIES of life (any depression historians?)
3) Any skills foreseen to guarantee job placement should one lose their job that could help them survive should another depression hit?
4) Anything I have not covered?

got ya. do you think it should be placed somewhere else on this forum?
regarding google...i am currently researching all i can. However, the wonderful thing about a forum is that it allows many people to converge on a topic in the opposite fashion of a popular search. It can become a living entity that can be used to gain specific information in a time where there may be little. I appreciate this and i understand i have asked many questions thus far on these forums and do apologize for this (one of the ignorant majority here in respect to this issue)
Google is awesome, but i am trying to hit it from both angles--cause thats how the ladies like it ;)

No more ridiculous than the AG and Sec. of Homeland Security telling you wrap your house in saran wrap and duck tape. LOL.
If it comes to that, I'd rather not be around for the aftermath anyway.

Lol.. ok ok well i suppose i should invest in tin foil then for so the "big man" cant see my thoughts... I do appreciate the r-tard babble directed my way, but i suppose not everyone can be constructive in their criticism...
hopefully the jokes are only in good fun, but i ask questions only as a means to spur more development in connections between the neurons and axons firing up in this cerebral cortex of mine.
I'll take this, however, and learn what i can from it. for those of you who are attempting to be helpful thank you. For those of you who have offered helpful advice in the past, it is much appreciated. I am beginning to think this forum a bit more on the level of intermediate-advanced levels in the realms of economics, investing and financial policy.
If, in the future, you feel it is not worthwhile, i would prefer you do yourself and me a favor fellas, and just dont answer or do not read my posts as i am on here strictly at this point to help myself to understand everything going on in the world so i can help both myself AND the ignorant majority to which i belong. Constructive criticism is welcome at this point, but please act as an adult and learn that you can teach someone simply by guiding rather than flaming.

Excuse me, I'm in charge of this Forum. The questions Fuznuts asked are most certainly appropriate for this Forum. Fuznuts is obviously new to the Forum. I would expect that long-time members of TickerForum show some restraint and respect of new people who have not been 'in the know' about the current economic situation. FedUpUSA is devoted to educating those who wish to learn and Fuznuts has asked honest questions. He wasn't asking to be ridiculed. I will warn you guys once, do not belittle new members! Fuz there really is a TON of information here. Using search is really helpful, but it can be tricky for the first time user. Here is a link to the search feature and the instructions on how to use it: http://www.tickerforum.org/cgi-ticker/ak....Read the instructions at the bottom and give it a try. Use keywords for what you are interested in finding. Let me know if you have any trouble.

Fuznuts: Welcome to the TF! Read the suggested threads. http://www.tickerforum.org/cgi-ticker/ak....Many books on the Great Depression. http://www.tickerforum.org/cgi-ticker/ak....The signs I know of are: -Bond market dislocation. --This is when the Treasury has to raise rates for each bond market auction/issue, above and beyond what the interest rate was prior to the auction. (The 'tail') --China, Japan, UK and others do not buy our bonds, and maybe even sell them to fund their own recoveries. -GM / Big 3 Auto makers bankruptcy. -Iran attacks, demonstrates a nuke, another terrorist attack, Israel attacks Iran. -Another stupid bailout that spends another $700B. -More bailouts of other industries. -Bailout of Mortgages. -Skills --All that tacky blue collar stuff. --Carpentry, welding, excavating, metal work.

As cliche as it sounds, firearms, and barring that, full capacity magazines that are likely to be banned under an Obama administration. I would also look at laying in some food, canned of things you already like to eat. This dosn't have to be an "omg the world is ending" only thing. Think of it as tangible insurance for any sort of disaster, natural or man made. Do you really want to be in the Superdome, waiting for a government handout?
This sounds tin, but there is nothing wrong with preparing yourself and your family for a disaster. It's the only responsible thing to do. I've gotten by much better than many neighbors during things such as power black-outs and winter storms. Most importantly of all, make friends with your neighbors. I always look to do the small things to try and be a better neighbor, even if they are not the greatest people in the world. I've lent out flashlights and donated firewood to many a shivering neighbor.
I could prattle on forever about this subject, as prudent (non-tinfoil) disaster mitigation is one of my favorite subjects. And it does not have to take over your life to the point where you are sitting in your basement clutching an SKS waiting for the "Race War" to begin. Those people give prudent disaster mitigation planners a bad name. I simply look at the glass half empty, and if I am wrong..well, I do like the taste of Spam....

I appreciate it guys. I wasnt quite sure if this thread was taking on the form of a laugh at the new guy and maybe take couple quick shots thing, but I am trying to take all this in stride. Sadly, it is this entire economic crisis which has really motivated me to learn, but at the very least if this has done anything of the sort for others in this nation maybe we will all start becoming more fiscally/governmentally aware/responsible.
I have moderated forums in the past, but not to any large degree. Truthfully, this forum is HUGE and as such I have been really trying to learn my way around as well as attempting to learn about all the tools it offers us. I do apologize for any redundancy on my part by posting when there have already likely been similar posts, however, that IS my fault.
And nothing against the smartasses out there...maybe you guys are just having fun. If so, keep it up...but just let me know so until i get a handle on your personality enough to know if you are being facetious or serious ;)
Just remember, we all know something that someone else doesnt and from which others could profit...and information is far more precious than money. when you build bridges rather than burn them, and care about helping others...it will come back to you in the end.

Yeah, I don't know what was up with that, but I apologise. Please stick around. We have lots of nice people here.
Welcome to FedUpUSA's little niche here on TickerForum. It really is a vast place, but this little sub-Forum is especially for people who are new to all this. If you have any more questions, please feel confident in asking them here - I'll make sure you aren't subject to any more rudeness.

Don't worry about it Fuzz. Breaking the cycle of debt slavery is one of the things that I am sure that anybody in this forum would be all for. Frankly one of the best things you can do to prepare is tighten the belt. That is what I did...every time I was getting ready to go and like..order a pizza or get some ice cream or buy a new video game. I asked myself if I really needed it..and of course the answer was no.
Instead I would take the money out of my wallet that I was going to to spend on that thing, and put it into my preparedness jar. And used that money to slowly build up a stock of food, firewood, batteries and other necessities to get by on. And I have been glad I did. After getting laid off from my job I have had a substantial reserve to fall back on, and have not had to panic like other people. My preps have paid off handsomely for me, and continue to do so. I have not had to run out and live off my credit card, and remain free of any debt whatsoever, and have not taken a single government dime. Just my two cents, but any person who does not have a stockpile must think that government is going to save them from whatever catastrophe. Katrina should be the prime example of relying on the government for anything.

The following is one of, maybe THE, best recommendation I ever heard of. It was told to me decades ago by someone I knew that lived thru the Great Depression:
When there is not a single job to be found, not anywhere by any one, make yourself a job in the following way. You do your homework and identify the kind of work you'd love to do, even if for free. Then you do just that, work for FREE.
Find a place that is still operating and doing business, even if they haven't hired a single person in months or even years. Offer to work FOR FREE. Give then the excuse that you need to 'keep busy', 'feel worthwhile', have a reason to get up in the morning, or otherwise some way of saying it's much to YOUR advantage, as much as theirs, even with NO pay.
You are however engaging in a sly bit of psychological trickery.
In a shorter range of time than you think, you begin to create a 'emotional liability' in your so-called employer. Day after day, they benefit 100% in a completely lopsided manner by way of your efforts. They don't sense it as such in so many words, but in time they become increasingly 'indebted' to you because they have gotten so much free labor. The guilt increases as each day passes.
Then, they start get uncomfortable enough to figure out ways to convert your non-paying role, to a position that earns you a wage. They do it in order to feel relief from the guilt that you have been steadily building up within them. You become first-choice for a position that eventually opens up, or in some cases they outright figure a way to just 'find' the money to fund your position.
I was told this bit of sage wisdom with a careful warning 'You must never forget what I have told you, as one day, you may need to do this to survive yourself'

wow guys...now these are the little things that i am talking about. GEMS of knowledge...
I am now completely glad that I have started this thread (though i still should have done the search first :P). I have been speaking with my grandpa alot on this subject as he lived through it himself.
By his thinking, this is EXACTLY how it went before the first depression. I suppose that is why it really got me thinking about how to save, because in the end we need to be the hard working ant...because it always pays off in the end.
I think this stuff should be the primary stuff we need to learn before being able to graduate from school...

The only way I see that working in today's world is if you could jack up your 'employer' on some kind of tax code violation. These days, I wouldn't bet on an employer's conscience.

I agree Davron. I'm still bitter about being laid off, so take this with a grain of salt. But I don't think the average American is what he/she used to be. I think we're a country of beached whales, parked infront of the TV watching a celebrity dance-off, not even knowing the names of people that they live next too. Everybody is only concerned about "Getting theirs" and not about putting some into the community so that later on if you need help, you can get it.
Tragedy of the commons, we have too many cows/beached whales and not enough productive people.

Me too fuz, and I am scared but have managed to store food and water. I am not where i'd like to be but very very close. All I need now is a handgun to go along with my shotgun and AMMO!
I mostly lurk here for signs of what is coming and when. As far as investing and making money, I am a dumbass. I just pay my bills and try to keep food on the table. I don't believe in credit cards, never did. All we owe is our house payment every month. It is getting hard to pay it too.
I do have a very small cabin in the woods. no elec or water but it is shelter. DAYUM.. At least we own it.
