Yes. Of course, that's all of CONUS, but if you're geographically flexible, we're hiring. :) Some of them are specialized (Hey, even I'm not willing to put up with the TS/SCI with lifestyle polygraph stuff). But most are just ordinary IT. Lots of LAMP fer instance. And the military is surprisingly aware of the latest best practice... J2EE, SOA, Struts, Oracle, etc.

I worked at a computer hardware company in the San Jose area, writing driver software for their hardware.

I was laid off about four weeks ago. The company had a hiring freeze for several months before that. One out of our three projects was canceled completely, so that could be considered reduced capital expenses (I was on that project).

My partner works as a system administrator for another, different, hardware company. His company is having a two week unpaid shutdown in January. They also haven't hired or given raises/bonuses/etc. in months, and every single expense (down to the level of $10.00 replacement computer mice) is being questioned. Not good.

I'm thinking about trying to get myself hired at the job I once worked: packing orders for replacement parts for pinball machines. Fun job, and I could set my own hours (as long as I completed all orders by the time the post office and other shipping offices closed).

We've had a combo--- layoffs, reduced hours, and no raises.

Venkman - Thanks for the tip. That hits the sweet spot on my resume. My current job should be safe for a while but you never know.

My company laid off 111 in Houston. Will know more when Obama tells NASA what to do, which should be Jan/Feb. Scheduled reorg of one department in Jan and my department in Feb. Bonuses retained in full this year, no salary cuts, pension/401K cuts. I'll know about raises in March, I may receive one simply because I became more valuable to them this month by adding another degree. There's an influx of new people last 6 months that I don't recognize - some from other groups, some new hires - I can't tell which or when anymore. My company is in contraction mode. The county and the state is nervous about it because for every job it eliminates, two in the greater economy are eliminated.

My days are numbered with the shuttle, but, until Obama gives NASA his priorities, I'm staying put. No sense in jumping ship to 2 weeks severance when current has 10 weeks severance, and risk a budget hole in the new ship in this economy. My best guess is both programs will be extended until such time as the gov defaults or learns to live within its means, which may be the same thing.

Lots of senior and middle level managers switching, leaving, retiring, etc.

Is that because the extended shuttle program was won by a different company?

No, current contract contains 5 one-year options that NASA can exercise.
