I don't have supporting data, so I know nothing about JJG, or how it's holdings are structured.

I heard in an audio file that JJG holds only corn, wheat and soybeans.

Quote:
iPath Dow Jones AIG-Grains ETN (JJG) – The grains are considered a
sub-sector to the agriculture and consequently there are not nearly as
many to choose from when building a grains ETN. JJG is composed of
only 3 commodities: soybeans (46%), Wheat (30%), and corn (24%).
Recently it has been okay to be concentrated on three very hot
commodities; since late October the ETN is up 31%. The two problems
with JJG are the low average daily volume resulting in large spreads
and the risk of being over concentrated.

DBA has made a move up since June, closing in on 26. This thing has been range bound between 21 and 29 for about 20 months. Is it finally going to break thru?

Check what DBA is made up of now. Too diversified to get away too far any one direction in any sort of hurry. Holding soybeans and live hogs is a good hedge but I wonder about holding something like that together in an ETF. This one is likely to stay pretty range bound.

Goodlander, Yeah, it doesn't surprise me. They need to set it up so the pros can fade the retail and not get caught. Single futures contracts are straight up risk, especially after being range bound for a while. You can't work a black box standard deviation on them like you probably can with this cauldron of crap. Main risk dollar moves and totally hedge-able.

As everyone pretty much knows I am a huge bull on food long term, I just don't really like DBA as a trading/investing instrument in it's revised form. Probably a gold mine for writing option contracts on. As liver indicated it is a stirred cauldron and I can find no formula's for where the weightings come from. A bit odd for a north american contract to have cocoa with almost the same weighting as corn and wheat put together. If that european cocoa "corner" goes bad DBA could take a hit, even if there are good basic foods fundamentals.

I preferred when DBA was just the crops. Following the hogs and cattle is just a bit too much work for my liking, plus I've never followed contract rollovers for the guys.

Now you'll only get any major upside in DBA if substantial price inflation occurs.
