I'm gonna go along with Boz. While I think the cop should have tried a dog biscuit or pepper spray first, you really don't know what your dog will do in this situation until it happens. The sweetest, child-loving, friendly-to-everyone family dog can turn very protective when confronted with a stranger entering its territory - especially if the owners (the pack leaders) aren't home.

That said, though, apparently they kept the dog outside in the yard. Dogs really should live in the house, not outdoors. That's in part what made it possible to shoot her.
