Lituya bay was special circumstances. The highest a tsunami can be in open ocean is 100-150 feet. Of course that height increases as the sea floor slopes up, but that's as big as it gets open ocean. Lituya bay was so high because it was a long narrow bay. Now you could get a massive tsunami (100+ ft) that channels straight into a bay like that and get destruction 1000+ ft up, but it would take very special circumstances to cause it. 2011-10-10 19:34:18
