I present this story to eloquently bookend and put into perspective the previous article about protest crackdown and introduction of draconian penalties in Canada:

Russian lawmakers slap big sanctions on protesters

By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV | Associated Press – May 22, 2012

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin targeted those who dare oppose him Tuesday, introducing draconian new fines for protesters and handing out Kremlin jobs to widely detested lieutenants despite the public anger they have generated.

A new law introducing a 200-fold increase in fines for taking part in unsanctioned protests was given preliminary approval by the Kremlin-controlled lower house, setting the stage for toughening Putin's crackdown on dissent.

Opposition lawmakers denounced the new fines as an attempt to stifle criticism, warning that it would fuel broad outrage and destabilize Russia by depriving the public of a way to express discontent.

So, there you have it. Dare to oppose what the rulers demand and you too will be branded a troublemaker and fined or worse into oblivion.

Note: the following penalties have been applied to protestors in Canada under Bill 78 Of The Province Of Quebec:
Quote:
According to the provisions of the bill, any infraction against its prohibitions require offenders to pay fines, which are paid for each day of infraction. Those fines amount to:

- $1,000-$5,000 for individuals
- $7,000-$35,000 for student or union leaders
- $25,000-$125,000 per day, student & labor organizations

Fines are doubled following a "second offence." Universities or institutions which do not comply with the provisions of Bill 78 are subject to the daily fees paid by student or labor organizations.

Notice that the $125,000 (or $250,000) fine may be applied to an individual student per day.

Either it be Canada, Putin's new Russia or the United States the objective is the same.

Dare to speak up and you will be bankrupted by the state or incarcerated indefinately for your inability to pay the fines designed to keep you behind bars and ineffectual.
