A huge state of denial doesn't help either. My BFF has a rather large rollover IRA at Fidelity and I've tried and tried to get her to put it into short term treasuries. She and her hubby have three kids, he's three years into his own business and they have a good bit of debt. Her FIL keeps telling her that the market goes up and down and any losses will be easily recovered. Sigh.
