Degrees in hard science/engineering did not stop them from pursuring policies that have ****ed their environment totally. It did not stop them from the 1 child policy, which leaves them with a gender imbalance that is going to cause social issues. The one child policy is the most important environmental action that any nation has ever taken. I would not place any degree of trust in any politician on the basis that they had degrees in science/engineering. Of course. But the evidence is that they understand long-term laws of physics and economics and how they govern prosperity and power. At one point the USA did as well, before the current anti-intellectual sentiment among the governing classes. Of course that doesn't prevent them from being *******s too. Look at the result: China has much, much superior technology and industrial power than any other nation with the same GDP/capita which shows that the numbers are clearly underrated. Does Britain have any telecom company which competes with Lucent Alcatel? No, but Huawei does. Does Russia make and design high end chips? No, but China does. They have gotten there with the full acquiescence and assistance of the West. In the end they will have the factories and the resources and knowledge and the people and the money. How did the USA get powerful? Same reasons. 2007-12-02 14:23:32
