We over-winter in Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands, and a couple of observations: First off: vacancies on main street are about 20%. For any of you that know Friday Harbor, it's an island destination where main street cascades up the hill and the street is lined with all sorts of sundries. Well, 20% vacancy is mild, but the real kicker is that the proprietors were mostly Real Estate Agencies/ Services--in addition the season hasn't seemed to begin here......OUCH! That should tell you something. Secondly, living on the U.S. Canada border-- I go to the mainland for goods-- like groceries, meat, produce, etc, and have noticed due to the exchange rate of the dollar, large vans full of senior citizens from Canada shopping in all the discount stores that I frequent. Okay--I say--what's good for the goose is good for the gander-- well--it's more like eating crow- actually. These folks are reveling in the fact that we have a cheap $$$-- and they be having a hay-day!!! Humble pie, baby.... 2007-12-02 15:26:30
