Adarak: If your broker goes bk or closes its doors for an extended stock holiday, you have a claim for your assets. You get to go thru the process of getting your money back. Line forms here. Govt insured! If you open a treasury direct account you can request them to sell your instruments at any time on secondary market. I think that that market is not likely to freeze up. Worst case, you wait till maturity, so spread out your maturity dates. I closed my accts at MS due to their derivatives exposure and went with schwab. Look at the stock price of MS, then look up schw. The market knows which brokers are in good shape and which are not. A depression, unlike a hyperinflation scenario, happens all at once. Doors close, atms get emptied. It takes awhile to sort out the mess. You may need to protect yourself from the very people you once trusted to protect your interests. Do some research... check with KD; he has a lot of good insights. Good luck.
