These tales of excess spending really hit home. My first wife never saved a dime. She would always say that we could start saving tomorrow. Tomorrow never came. Thank God I divorced her or I still wouldn't have a pot to***** in. Wife #2 is completely the opposite; saves quite a bit of her salary and still has money left over to help her mother. My current wife and I have maxed out our 401Ks this year ($15,500 each) and have maxed out our Roths ($4000 each). All the while, I'm paying child support and my daughter's college tuition. My wife and I always pay off our monthly credit card bills. I use a credit card for just about everything. We don't even bother to budget; if we want something, we buy it. I guess that our wants and desires are much less than most peoples'. I look at it this way - if you can't live on a little less than you earn every month, you're living too high a standard of living. I don't care how much you make - if you can't set aside a bit every month, you're ****ing up. We live a decent life, but certainly not extravagant. Both cars are paid off. I bought my wife a brand new 2005 Acura TL with all the bells and whistles with cash off of the money that I made shorting Northwest Airlines into bankruptcy. I have set aside enough from this summer's profits to pay cash for a brand new Toyota Yaris equipped the way my daughter wants it; it was factory ordered in mid-Nov and should be delivered around Christmastime. My mom was a low paid secretary, but she was very frugal. She has saved a bunch of money, and in spite of having a lot of assets, she spends less than what she gets in social security. My brother and one of my sisters are frugal and both have decent nest eggs saved. My other sister - well, every family's got one or two spendthrifts. 2007-12-02 21:04:14
