Since I doubt many people in the US put their 401k money in the Nikkei I think we can eliminate that from the discussion. Yes, the Naz bubbled and crushed a lot of people. Point taken. However, since the beginning of the 401k era (1978-9) using whatever braod based index you want (Dow, Wilshire, etc) you've done pretty well by putting your money in the stock market and letting it sit. 99.999% of all 401k contributors don't have the time, intelligence, ability to trade their portfolios or switch from short to long with proper timing. Hell, the number I see all the time is that 80% of all traders lose money - and they are supposed to know what they're doing. If you truly have a long-term horizon combined with the tax benefits, buying solid equities (I'm not talking Palm or Worldcom, etc) in your 401k, even in a bear market is a decent investment. 2007-12-01 11:25:41
