And if gold is a purely speculative commodity play, why did the world's governments retain it despite removing their currencies from the gold standard? Aren't currency notes simply a medium of exchange based simply upon a promise of value by what may be a government which lacks ANY fiscal credibility? In the event of a damage to the credibility of all the world's fiat currencies, wouldn't gold be the most likely place to find value as a medium of exchange?
