Matthew is right about what to do when encountering a cop.

If the cop initiates the encounter, STFU!

If you initiate the encounter, state your case, and then STFU! Don't get mission creep.

Once you consent to a search, you have just broomed about 90% of your 4th Amendment rights. If you say "no," and the cop searches anyway, your attorney has something to start with in challenging the search.

Having "nothing to hide" may seem like a safe way to play it, but there is no harm in forcing the cops to follow the law and get a proper warrant.

Most cops are honest and don't screw around with you. Just like anyone else, there are some bad cops. That's what the Bill of Rights is for.
