I've had credit cards get*****y with the late fees.
I send them payments by priority mail with internet confirmation.
Costs a bit more than a stamp, but the late fees come to a halt immediately.
Plus I've found they don't flop around the postal service extra days.

I could pay the CC's off but if everyone else gets bailed, damn it I am going for the bail too. Just keep the rates low by moving around.

I don't shop at Costco but I stopped by to see if people were out spending. At 12:30pm, the parking lot was about 50% full. Inside, the vast majority were buying food. No interest in big screen TVs. Short or no lines at the checkout registers...

Yeah, it's sad. I was able to convince my parents as too the scenario that was likely to play out almost a year ago. Yet they still went out and purchased a second house and probably have 6x their combined annual income in mortgage/heloc debt and virtually no savings...

Plus my dads pension appears to be invested in a county pool that bought a bunch of subprime securities.

Hah, hah, Julia. True enough. I miss that.

And, if you don't want delivery, you usually don't have to walk too far to get what you want.

"the first generation after the depression they think their folks were silly for being so tight and stupid about saving money..."

my mother exactly, she inherited 2/3 estate of 16000 acres of land. 800,000 in muni bonds, incredible stock portfolio of mostly plank stock in 1964. and she and my father not only went through every penny. they emptied out a trust fund that was left for my education and business start.

she still doesn't have a clue, oh, its not stupidity, both my parents were college grads. its some sort of me,me,me mentality. it doesn't seem to even enter her mind that she has destroyed wealth of a 250 year old family. back in the 70's she would have looked down her brow at you if you worked. she didn't work and had a daily maid. now she is on a fixed income and nothing, and still acts as if she is to the manor born.

Agoura Costco was packed today. We had to drive around to find a parking spot.
I spent 10 minutes watching people's carts at the exit. All were carrying basic stuff: food, water, paper, wine, clothes.
Not one big sticker item.

The missus pays electronically every month. Bank is not issuer of either card. If there is a dispute, we sic our bank on the card company. Of course, the cards are USAA and Chase, so likely not a candidate for games.

My 80 year old neighbor lived with her grandparents during the Great Depression, for about 6 years. Only her grandfather had a secure job (NYC police dept). Still, with so many kids and grandkids, they could not turn on the heat in the winter!

She says the next Depression is coming, and her kids have no clue. She's mad at her kids for spending too much money.

My parents are the same way. Spend it all and more and ho gives a **** about anything else. I am managing some money for mom and she is all flustered that I am down a bit because of this weeks rally. She had money for a while (my dad had a bunch of businesses through the 90's) and she still acts like she does. Looks down at people because of where they live etc. (even though she doesn't have ANY income and relies on her boyfriend and my father (separated). They have allays been so motivated to keep up with the Jonses and it just boggles my mind, I've talked about it with them and there is no point in arguing with them about it at this point. I spoke with my grandfather about the depression (he passed about 6 months ago and he didn't mind dying, he didn't want to go through it again). The elderly know what is going on (many do at least). Talk to some that have lived through it if you can and you will be very enlightened about what you can do to survive & even thrive.

Labor will get VERY cheap and don't worry, the illegals will go back to Mexico.

Ohana - EXACTLY what I've been trying to say on other threads. On both points.

Some of the elderly can give you quite some bizarre accounts (someone recounted a story of an old lady boiling down jelly to get the mold out)....but they have a wealth of valuable information.

From my observation, those 75 and up get it because they were old enough during the depression to remember the hardships. Those 65 and over that actually LISTENED to their parents, seem to be the 'first' of the boomers and they didn't get on the 'me', 'me', 'me' bandwagon. These guys are the ones withdrawing their money right now and who have reduced their debt, or eliminated it.

It's everyone that came after that, that never listened to their parents and grandparents who were like 'boomers gone wild' in the entitlement era. Those people are going to be desimated.

I lived for 6 years with my grandmother right out of high school. She died in 1989 at the age of 72. She told me a lot about the Depression from the American perspective and the British perspective. She had some pictures she would show me. Even though I just had no point of reference, it was always devastating to me to know she and my grandfather went through that. I did manage to learn all kinds of things that I'm sure are going to serve me well very shortly. My grandma would have removed her money from the banks 2 years ago.

the first generation after the depression they think their folks were silly for being so tight and stupid about saving money...

Those friggin, irresponsible, ****forbrainz, self centered, keepupwiththejonezes, boomers are to blame for this entire mess. Boy are they in for one rude awakening when TSHTF. They will not have a clue where to begin to cut back. But, this insanity really goes across all of the generations, even down to 6 year olds.
I believe we are headed for a monster of a depression and it will test the foundations of American resourcefullness. The new heros will be debt free, crafty, inventive, simpleliving, humble and well versed in a variety of domestic, mechanical, and contruction arts. They will lead the way and will obliterate the Paris Hilton ethic for good. I am so excited I can hardly wait!
