Saw this in USA Today.

Anyone know if this has turned up in US yet? Article doesn't say so, just that it is something that hasn't been faced in 50 years. Looks like it could be devastating to the wheat crop if it were to hit.

Not here yet.

There is lots written here on this. They were trying to breed up wheat using SR32 and 35 (don't quote me on the exact genes) as those two strains were still resistant to UG99. The fungus mutated in south africa a year or two ago and now takes out those genes as well. Sprays work on it however they are not practical in all parts of the world.

UG99 is not the only risk. There are other fungus varieties up and running in the middle east, pakistan and south america. Rumor has it that some of these fungi have developed resistance to the fungicides.

I'm assuming this is a form of wheat rust?

Yes that is a form of rust.

It is leaf rust, not a stem rust like UG99. It's effects are much less severe.
