Kwerk Posts: 908 Incept: 2009-03-02 Banned	I have a fully under ground 9' walls basement but I'm really considering building a safe room down there. There's nothing much protecting you from above. Just a 2x6 sill plate with a few bolts holding the house to the ground. I know in hurricane areas the code calls for straps/ties but as far as I know the midwest doesn't have codes for any of that stuff. Lots of houses have a walk out basement with one wall just a regular stud wall, insulation board sheathing, no sheer strength to the walls just some bracing at the corners maybe, nothing but a few nails holding the roof down. FEMA has plans for building a safe room, doesn't look too complicated. Getting a good door would be the biggest hassle. http://www.fema.gov/library/viewRecord.d.... 2012-03-05 00:49:56 Permalink
